Laptop Internet connection

I have an older toshiba laptop running windows 2000, us robotics wireless adapter. The troubleshooter says i have a full connection and excellent signal strength but i still can't connect to the internet. The card has my ip address for my router but still no connection please help. I am computer savvy but not to network savvy .

I have a similar problem on my fiances netbook, using XP.

1. Following the instructions to the usb wireless adapter (Edimax EW-7316Ug), I installed the utility and driver
2: I have followed the instructions to establish a wireless connection to the point where actually no connection had been establish! (and it should other computers are connected and everything is fine- the wi-fi router is an n-class lynksis).
It looked like EW-7316Ug was always trying to connect to the router but couldnt. Looking at the icon in the "Network Connections" it jumped from connected to Not connected all the time. Next I typed the IP, Mask, Default gateway, Preffered DNS server manually
!The connection to the Router Seemed o.k. but still No Internet possible!
- other pcs, had no problems with that
- the computer with this issue is an acer 751 netbook
- the wi-fi onboard of the acer is not working (a known issue)
- i ve changed the Wireless Network Mode to b-only, g-only, mixed
- i ve randomly picked up different Wireless channels
all this did not helped and sometimes got even worse. I dont know where is the problem, or what else to do.
Help will be greatly appreciated
