Default Lost Wireless Networking Capabilities on Sony VAIO VGN-S260P

Problem: I've lost wireless networking capabilities on my Sony VAIO VGN-S260P. O/S is Windows XP SP3. Wireless network adapter is Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 BG.

Question: Do you suspect this to be a hardware issue (i.e. wireless adapter, motherboard), an O/S issue or some other issue? What other steps can I take?

Symptoms:

1. Wireless internet connectivity not functional -- was intermittent for about a week and machine would sometimes freeze and require a restart.
2. Wireless adapter no longer being recognized by machine -- in Device Manager the wireless adapter is not present.
3. On system startup I receive the Error message "Resource Conflict PCI in Slot 03, Bus: 02, Device: 0B, Function: 00." I have to push "F1" to continue startup.
4. Machine continuously cycles through startup -- when machine gets to the Windows login screen a "blue screen" briefly appears (from which I can't gather info) and cycles back through startup. Only way to avoid this from happening is to start machine from last known good config.
5. Continue having uninterrupted Wired LAN functionality (I'm writing this from the machine in question)
6. Have verified the wireless access point is functioning properly using another machine.
7. Have verified the wireless switch on my machine is turned on.

Solutions Attempted without Positive Outcome:

1. Reseated the wireless network adapter.
2. Reinstalled all network and wireless LAN drivers + updated for the machine (to include the original network adapter for the machine, Intel PRO/100 VE) in Safe Mode.
3. Conducted System Restore.
4. Attempted to start Windows using Last Known Good Config.
5. Reset BIOS to factory default settings.
6. Tried manually adding the wireless network adapter through the "Add Hardware" wizard.
7. Updated virus definitions and conducted a scan to ensure machine is not infected.
8. Attempted to startup the machine while the wireless network adapter was unseated. I did not receive the Error message "Resource Conflict PCI in Slot 03, Bus: 02, Device: 0B, Function: 00" on system startup, but the machine continued to cycle through the startup process.

That is a very elaborated question you asked

Question: What do you see when you run ipconfig/all command at dos prompt? Do you see wireless driver info?

The problem definitely seems to be with your hardware and not driver if you can see and use the router on another machine. Have you tried hardware diagnosis?

Hi cravehelper, thanks for the reply...

-- When running ipconfig/all I only see the ethernet adapter -- the wireless adapter is not recognized.

-- When running hardware diagnostics / disk error check there aren't any abnormalities.

-- Every once in a while my machine recognizes the wireless card and connects to the network. It doesn't take long, though, before the wireless connection drops in conjunction with the machine freezing and having to be restarted.

Any thoughts?

network cards require a lot of resources from the motherboard
sound cards require a lot of resources from the motherboard

put them on the same PCI bridge; crash and burn

start by disabling the sound card in control panel and rebooting. see if the network card works after that

this is likely to be a tough problem to resolve.
