Default Neighbor's WiFi - need help!

Hi,

I could really use some help with my wifi situation. I recieve a weak wifi signal from my neighbors house (with permission) located 30 feet away. The only way I can get a useable signal on my laptop is with an external wifi antenna plugged into my usb and I must sit right by the window. I would like to find a way to take that signal and push it through the house without having to go to my neighbor and bother them. I bought a linksys Wireless G Range Expander (wre54g) but after 2 hours on the phone with Tech Support we couldn't get it to work. Is there a device that can pull a weak signal in and then repeat it through the house? If the device has a strong receiving antenna all the better. The other option would be to take the signal coming in through the antenna and attach a device to my laptop to broadcast it. At least that way I could use the ipad and other wireless devices through the house even if the laptop had to remain stationary.

I am not all that tech savy so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Jeff

Mark (or others),
Thanks for the link to the forum with a thorough explanation. I hate to admit it is still a bit much for me to comprehend. I have a weak signal coming in at the window only (very weak but enhanced on my laptop (vista) with the aid of a hawkins high-gain directional antenna). What do I need to buy or do to get that signal bounced through my house? I can leave the laptop with the Hawkins antenna where it is if that helps. Can I add a router of some sort to the the laptop to broadcast the signal? if so what do I get and how do I set it up in simple terms please. The neighbors router is a d-link. All the Wan, Lan, Client,, etc jargon just gets muddy......... Thanks!!

This is what u need since the signal is very weak, get an eoc2611P outdoor device from (Engenius Tech, Inc.) and a 24dbi outdoor grid or panel antenna with a rp sma - N male pigtail cable for connecting the antenna to the radio from (Cable Assemblies | Connectors | Adapters | Amplifiers | Antennas | Wireless Connectivity Products from L-com.com).

mount the radio and antenna together on a pole and face in the direction of your neighbour's house. (find a convenient way to place the pole).
configure the 2611P radio as a CB- client bridge, do a site survey and u will see the ssid of your neighbours router and connect to it. check the signal strength to make sure its high and good enough, if its not the try turning the pole slightly on either direction to improve the signal strength, connecting the cable from the radio a properly configured router should now give u a wireless access and distribution all over your house.
(reading and following the manual step by step for configuring the radio will help u).

If u already have a router good but if u dont u can get one from the sme engenius site. they have so many good indoor routers, when buying look for a high power router, a 600mW router is perfect so as to be sure that the signal will cover your entire house.

configure the router as a regular AP-access point with a unique SSID NAME, use security encryptions if u choose, enable the DHCP SERVER on the router, on the setting for internet connection mode use DYNAMIC.
plug in the cable from the radio into the WAN/INTERNET PORT on the router and u are done. with a laptop search for your own unique ssid and connect to it, signal should be high and browsing off your neighboursinternet possible too.

tell me how it went.
