Default Netgear WGT624 to Fiber Modem

HI,

I've been using this router for a few years now without any problems.
I recently upgraded from ADSL to VDSL.
When I connect my PC directly to VDSL (CAT5 cable) my speed tests come back between 56-58MBps
When I connect the VDSL to my WGT624 to my PC (same CAT5 cable) my speed tests come back at 22-23MBps
I have tried rebooting all devices and also turning off SPI Firewall but the result is always the same. It seems like the Netgear is cutting my speed in half.
Currently, I am not even using any wireless devices, that'll come later so I do need to keep going through my WGT624.

Any ideas of why my WGT624 is cutting my speed in half?

The WGT624 is not one of those listed but there is a great variety in throughput with different routers.

You may have to buy a new one.

Default Thanks

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your post!

I saw the page and like you said, mine's not listed.
I should have mentioned that I have used it before with 2 wired hosts and up to 3 wireless hosts and the router itself is capable of 100 Full duplex.
Like I said, it seems to be cutting my speed in roughly half.
later I'll be playing with MTU size (currently 1500 but read a lot about DSL/PPoE doing better at 1492, can't find any info about the best MTU for a Fiber connection so I'll try anyway).

I read somewhere else that I may need to change either my modem or my router to "Bridge" mode. It could be an issue with double NAT (never saw a speed issue with NAT itself so I'm not sure why doubling it would slow me down?) I'm in Japan but flashed my router with English firmware so I would much rather have control over the router as I can read the pages in it, but it may take a while to find a translator to help switch the modem into bridge mode.

Any other ideas?

There was a link on that page which took you to SmallNetBuilder - Small Network Help - How We Test Hardware Routers 2006
If you have 2 computers you could check the WAN to LAN performance yourself and as this would be independent of the modem it would verify if there was a compatibility problem or whether the router was at fault. When you have previously checked for the 100 Mbs duplex I presume this was done on the switch side and did not involve going from WAN to LAN or LAN to WAN but only LAN to LAN.

You may want to look at iperf for measuring the quality of your network link.
