Plan: Network Dlink & LInksys, on 2 network Wlan via WDS

Hey there. I am trying to set up a network with two subnets, using one router for the first network, and gateway. The second is for the second network and access the Net through the first.
1st Router is a D-link DI-634m 108Mbs MIMO Super G router with up to date Dlink firmware. It has a laptop with 802.11g card and a wired desktop with Ethernet hanging off it.

2nd Router is a Linksys WRT54GSV4, with DD-WRT v23-SP2 3rd party firmware. With a Desktop with Ethernet and 802.11g card. Mac Mini with Ethernet and 802.11g card, and Laptop with 802.11g Card.

I would like to set it up so they are two seperate subnets, which both can access the Internet, and other computers within their own network. I upgraded the linksys router with DD_WRT so that it would have greater functionaility especially WDS, which after reading a lot seems to be required for this.
The Dlink has a default IP of 192.168.0.1, and the Linksys has a Default IP of 192.168.1.1 so I figured I would keep these internal c class subnets and branch out from there. I am not sure how to confire the Linksys to the Dlink in regards to settings, especially in the WDS settings.
Ideally I would like to also have the MacMini & TJDesktop linked both via Ethernet and wirelessly, if/when needed. Further I wish to configure them to also be able to get to the Dlink Wirelessly as well. (Trying to build redundency, albeit if the Dlink goes down, then everything is down!) I woudl liek to have the PCs off the Dlink to reside on the 192.168.1.0 network, while the Pcs residing off the Linksys are the 192.168.1.1 network.


The Dlink has bene given Ip via DHCP of 192.168.1.97 with a gateway of 192.168.1.254 and subnet 255.255.255.0

Been kinda stuck for a bit. I believe my layout is correct, but I have yet to achieve a link between the Dlink and the Linksys. The Dlink shows a routing table of

I believe I still have lots of configuring to go. I believe I am missing required bits of information to complete this project. I believe going static may be the best approach and I am negating the use of encryption at this point, but plan on WPA2-PSK. Then I would like to establish file sharing on both subnets for the 921(Dlink) router and its two PCs, and the 911(Linksys) Router and it's two PCs and one Mac (which is a whole another ballgame)

I have gotten to a point, but further assistance in building a workable configuration. And just for background this is me trying to be a nice guy and mak emy GF and neighbor happy. He's got the Dlink router and two computers and my GF and I have the Linksys router and two Pcs/ one Mac. They both want to have Internet, and wireless laptops. They both want file/print sharing, and I don't want them to be on the same network. ohh BTW would it be preferred to set up a vlan on the Linksys, and then keep all the computers on the same subnet? My thinking is the Vlan will give me the separation Iam looking for, but makes it easier to deal with subnets and networks.

Anyways, I know this is all about helping each other out in a voluntary spirit of techno friendship, so with that let me extend a thank you for even taking the time to read all of this.

I have two LinkSys Wireless-G routers straight from CompUSA.

I want to do the same thing in order to support some testing. I want a Router-01 to be my gateway DSL router with 192.168.1.0 as its LAN side subnet. Router-1 is 192.168.1.1 on its LAN side.

Router-2 is 192.168.2.1 on its LAN 192.168.2.0 subnet with its WAN connection is 192.168.1.5 in the first port of Router-1.

I have done the "Internet" accessibility thing successfully. My 192.168.2.0 clients use 192.168.2.1 as their "gateway". Thus, Router-2 passes their requests to Router-1 which is a "gateway" to the DSL cable modem. Subnet 2 clients can browse the web all day and they can access Subnet-1 machines with pings, etc.

What I cannot do is access Subnet-2 computers from Subnet-1?

Any time I try to change either Router-1 or Router-2 from a "Gateway" to a "Router" on the Advance Routing tab, it stops clients from accessing the internet or the next higher subnet. Any ideas?

I have figured out how to create a two subnet network, using two LinkSys WRT56G wireless routers as illustrated in my previous post. My process was correct, but my problem was related to an outdated firmware version. In partictular, my router was a "Version 6" and it needed the Version 1.02.2 update from Welcome to Linksys.com. As soon as I updated the router firmware, it worked.

Here is a summary of HOWTO:

On Router-1 (The Gateway)
1. Connect Router-1 to the DSL modem.
2. Logon the administrative web pages at 192.168.1.1
3. On the Basic Setup, select DCHP for the WAN side of Router-1
4. Specify 192.168.1.1 on subnet 255.255.255.0 for the 192.168.1.0 subnet.
5. Enable DHCP on the LAN side starting at 192.168.1.100 for 50 clients
6. Specify the ISP DNS server addresses.
7. Save Settings.

At this point, verify that your clients (static or dynamic) on the 192.168.1.0 subnet can contact the internet and ping each other.

On Router-2 (Subnet-2 Router)
1. Ensure Router-2 is connected to a standalone computer only.
2. Logon the administrative web pages at 192.168.1.1
3. On the Basic Setup, select Static for the WAN side of Router-2.
4. Specify 192.168.1.2 as the WAN IP Address in order to talk to Router-1.
5. Specify 192.168.2.1 on subnet 255.255.255.0 for the 192.168.2.0 subnet.
6. Save Settings.

Now you can connect the two routers.
1. Connect Router-2 WAN port (192.168.1.2) to any LAN port on Router-1.
2. Enable DHCP on the LAN side starting at 192.168.1.100 for 50 clients

Now enable routing from Router-1 to Router-2.
1. On Router-1, go to the Advanced Routing option.
2. Create a new Static Route with the following settings:
Select GATEWAY as the operating mode
Destination LAN is 192.168.2.0
Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.2
Interface is LAN & Wireless
Save Settings

Now enable routing on Router-2
1. On Router-2, go to the Advanced Routing option.
2. Create a new Static Route with the following settings:
Select Router as the operating mode
Ensure RIP is set to Both
Save Settings

You should now be able to access the internet from both subnets, ping computers internally on each subnet, and ping subnet to subnet.
