Question Problem connecting router to access point (in repeater mode)

Hi,

I have a wireless router (Asus RT-G32) which I have setup and it works perfectly. I wanted to expand the wireless coverage, so I got an Edimax access point (EW-7416Apn V2). The instruction manual says that it should work as a wireless repeater, not needing a cable link to the router. I have made all the settings, the AP is set in Universal Repeater mode, but as soon as I remove the cable the AP internet connection doesn't work anymore. The WLAN light is flashing (so it is communicating with the router), I can connect my laptop to it but I cannot open any pages on the internet. DHCP is enabled on the router and disabled on the AP. I have set them both up to work on the same channel. I am not sure that this is relevant, but I have noticed that when the router and the AP are linked by cable, the router, the AP and the laptop have consecutive IP's, but when I remove the cable and try to connect via AP, I get a totally different IP sequence. Please help

To summarize:

-Router linked via cable to AP, I can connect to either one and browse the net without issue
- Router without cable link to the AP, I can connect to either one, but I can only browse the net when connected to the router.
