Default Problem with wireless, can't see connections in list, but can connect if I enter SSID

As of yesterday, i started having trouble with my laptop's wireless connections. It still tells me when i boot up that wireless networks are detected, and to click on the bubble to view possible connections. When I click the bubble however, the connections screen says no networks are detected. I've upgraded drivers, uninstalled and installed the wireless adapter, used the repair feature several times, and i still can't get the list of networks to appear. However, i have tried manually entering the SSID at my brother's house, where i know the name, and the computer connects to the internet. Sometimes however, it still tells me in the task bar that I am disconnected. I wish to solve this problem of course, to be able to use wireless networks at cafe's etc.

any ideas?

thanks

Try removing all of the networks listed in the adapters property page (under advanced settings IIRC) and manually setting them up again.

What type of adapter does the laptop have?
