I was surfing the net getting a strong signal from unsecured open network here in Chicago when early evening, I was not able to connect any more. The signal was still there, strong in zero config utility, but when I tried to connect to the same ssid which was still open, it did not say 'acquiring network address'; would just fail to connect to the unsecured network. Tried everything, nothing worked. Different wifi adapters, computers etc.
Is it possible that the 'owner' of the router turned off the router so that I was unable to connect yet still able to see the network?
This is a question for an intermediate or pro like Jeff Leiberman.
Thank you.
It is possible... it is also possible that they stopped transmitting thier SSID OR it is possible that they 'caught on' and simply encrypted thier router . Time to find another host in any case.
If they stopped transmitting their ssid, then I would not see it in my avail wifi networks, correct? But it was there, 4 or 5 bars but I could not connect(suddenly, even though used it previously w no prob.)
If it was encrypted, I would still see it but would not been able to connect.
Anyway I am having no problems at all right now connecting same ssid.
Why? (strange)
