Default Random "request timed out" via wireless link

Hi.

I'll try to describe the problem the best I can.

I experience some random data loss via WiFi.
The AP is 3Com Wireless 8760 Dual-Radio 11a/b/g PoE Access Point with two antennas.
The NIC is Intel 3945 ABG in my laptop. It is rather common NIC, so I don't think it's client-side problem.

No encryption, no security, just an open WiFi spot.

The client connects fine, acquires the IP address and everything seems to be nice and shiny. But trying to ping the router gives we 3% or so packet loss with "request timed out" error. (It shows also the random increase in response time from 1-3ms to 30-40ms)

This is rather annoying because my ssh connection randomly freezes or even drops. The web surfing is also not that pleasant.

I am using the latest drivers from vendors and have AP's firmware upgraded but the problem still exists.

I am not very familiar with WiFi, so any help or advise are welcome.

I tried different distances, played with the settings on the AP with no success.

Thanks in advance.
