Default SMCWEBT-G Works as AP but not Ethernet Client

I have a SMCWEBT-G device and can configure it as an access point and it works. I can then configure it as an ethernet client and see my router (motorola WR850G) and make the motorola router my "associated asscess point" but cannot get the internet to work on the desktop the SMCWEBT-G is hooked up to for the life of me. I've wasted hours on this with no success, disabled security tried different IP address schemes but doesn't work. I'd just use a dongle but have gone through 2 of them in the last year and they are not very reliable at the distance (from house to garage).
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Matt
