I just received wireless service from Charter Communications, If your not familiar, its a popular communication provider here in Michigan. Anyways. I purchased Wireless...I have a laptop with a built-in wireless detector, I'm guessing thats what its called. (I don't need an external card, I push a button and it automatically checks for connections available) Well. I cant access the wireless. The technician took a long while trying to figure it out...We switched routers as well. I can use the Ethernet easily, but for some reason, Although I can see and find wireless that is accessible. I can not, however use the wireless, It doesn't allow me to connect. I can access and easily connect into other wireless elsewhere, from Linksys, Mine is a Netgear...I doubt that has anything to do with it. My Parents, had wireless from the same company, not too long ago, though it was blocked, I could still see and try to connect. But would be denied. What I want to know, is this a problem with my computer? Or with the service? As I said, I can use the ethernet easily. but I can not connect using wireless. It for the most part, says "Not Connected" though once in awhile I can get "Limited or No Connectivity" Ive tried many things, hard resets, one thing I think seems strange, if i type in my "address" for my router (http://000.000.0.0 (not actual numbers, of course)) it takes me to the page, through ethernet, but asks for a user name and password, I have not set up anything. I have no idea if this has anything to do with it, but I'm totally lost. I'm paying good money for this...And if i cant use it? Its pointless to me...Remember. I can pick up and use other wireless connections for the most part (assuming signal strength allows) and I have little/no problem with it. Is it something with having to wait 24 hrs? I'm no technician. I have no clue. But then again, the technician who came to hook it up, didn't have much of a clue in how to handle this either...Any Ideas? Please be prompt and thorough if possible...Ive been messing with this near 6 hours now...and its really frustrating...OH and when changing my saved connections from "Manual" to "Automatic" clicking the box for automatic, makes it manual, and then un-clicking it makes it "On Demand" I have NO clue what that means, and its not done this until now.
Could you clear up a few points please.
I am no familiar with ChaRter so
1.Have you got a Wireless connection to the ISP or do you have a cable connection to the ISP and are trying to set up wireless networking in your home?
2.Lack of information about your wireless devices means we don't have sufficient information about their firmware and set up to really help so if you could tell us the name and model of the wireless card in your laptop, the operating system your laptop is using and whether all the updates have been done on it. Since you mentioned Netgear I will assume you have a CG814WG.
3.Did Charter not provide you with a manual for the modem/router?
IP 192.168.100.1
User Name admin
Password password NB it may be 1234 depending on software version.
If you do not have a manual the set up procedure for the Lan and wireless should be similar to the CG814M ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/Re...ual_CG814M.pdf
NB since Charter provided you with the item the Wan set up will probably have been locked to Charter.
Since you have performed several "hard resets" your Netgear will be at it's default state and you will have to set up the Wireless Configuration again.
You will need to log on to the Netgear and go to the "Wireless Settings" then
a. SSID change this to a unique name that you can easily recognise.
b. Channel If you have any idea which channels your neighbours use then make sure you are on a one 4 channels away. If you don't know change it from it's default to one 4 channels away.
c. Encryption Until you get your network working do not use encryption. When you have the network working then add encryption.
Make sure you save the settings and try to connect with your laptop.
I dont know if this will help you any. But here is my OS info. Microsoft WinXp. Version 2002. Service Pack 2. HP, Mobile AMD Sempron, Processor 3300+. If you need further info. I can give it to you. Basically. This is a rental laptop. Windows automatically configures my wireless network settings...And.Automatically updates daily. My network adaptors are thus: Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN and Realtek RTP8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. Wireless Cable Modem Gateway (seriel number). And to register my product on their website...it took me in circles...I hope that helps some...I used device manager to locate these, if there is a better spot to look, please tell me. Im no computer wiz, I just happen to know how to do some pretty basic things.
Should I call tech support? Im not the worlds most...patient person for this sort of thing. I dont want to mess things up worse then they are now. I read the Wireless Setup instructions provided VIA ftp://download.netgear.com/files/re...ual_CG814M.pfd, I understood some, but others I did not. for my routers address, I tried the UN: admin PWRD: 1234, that yielded no result. If you can offer further help, thank you. If not. Its alright, I know im probably not helping you much. I gave you the info i currently have...Please respond.
Yes, that worked, my only problem now, Is i have no clue what to click...to get it up and running, I figured why it wasnt working (wireless) is because it wasnt "active" there is an option to click, to activate that connection, I have no idea how to add devices and such, IE (mac codes/ip addresses/and the like) If you could help me with that, Id really appreciate it. The company who installed it, called for a follow up, I told her what happened (the rep) and she incessantly apologized. I told her how it was, but as with annything, I dont get mad. Its human error, and Ive made plenty of them myself. Anyways. I can give you the info on what it asks for, if you need it. but for the most part, I have no clue where to go from here.
A lot of people leave their routers with the default settings, which is not a good idea and can cause confusion if your neighbours have similar eqpt from the same ISP.
Go to wireless settings and change the SSID to something you can instantly recognise and is unique to the neighbourhood.
Change the wireless channel to one at least 4 from the default
Save the settings.
Go to you computer and scan for your network. When found "connect" to it.
The router should come with DHCP enabled by default so their should be no problem obtaining an IP address. You should be able to access the Internet.
If that has worked go back to the wireless settings in the router.
I have no idea of the firmware that was issued by your ISP so I am not sure what encryption you have available to you.
Does your router have the capability to do WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK encryption? These are much more secure than WEP. You will normally have to enter a "gibberish" password of between 8-63 characters which you will also need for the computer wireless device you are going to connect with.
Mac filtering I would ignore, while it is another layer of security "MAC Cloning " is easily accomplished, so "allow access to everyone".
Save the settings.
Go to you computer and scan for your network. When found "connect" to it, you will be asked for the password you entered into the router and after entering it, sometimes twice, you should be able to connect.
I changed the SSID, and the channel is set to 11. Is that good?
Yes I do have wpa one and two, which should I use? Im setting it up right now, I have the disable, wep 64 bit, wep 128 bit, wba psk preshare, wpa2 psk, wpa. i have the wpa psk selected. Ill use a bunch of random recognizable numbers to me. Is nine-teen numbers good? should the p be static or dynamic? Dynamic is selected. most of the other stuff is kind of conflusing, such as port blocking/forwarding/triggering. I basically added my ip address...and hope that works...Ill await the next post from you. with your advice on everything.
