Default Very low signal strength even router is only 7m away

Hi everyone,

I have two PCs at home and wanted to have both connected to the internet so decided to connect one with a wire and the other one by wireless connection. My router is only 6-7m away from the computer which I'm trying to connect by wireless and still I'm getting only low to very low signal to it. What confuses me the most is the fact I receive better signal from some other people having wireless in my range than from my own router which is closest to my PC. I'm not sure what is causing this because I already tried 3 different wireless cards and was getting almost same results with all of them (last one I bought was the most expensive one in a store - 150 Mbit). I also have a laptop which I rarely use with Ubuntu installed and seems it receives much better signal so I think the problem is in Windows (XP SP2). If anyone knows how to solve this please help. Thanks in advance.

First, I would check the operating channel of your Wireless AP. If you know how to do a site survey, do that. If not, Just change the operating channel (try channel 1, 6, and 11) and record the results. If there was an improvement, set the operating channel to the one with the best results.

Apart from the signal strength, do you face slow down in the internet connection?

Thanks for the tip but I already tried that and there was no improvement at all. I wouldn't say internet connection on that computer is too slow but still I'd like to know why is my link listed as weaker than the other ones in range.
