I have a wap54g and a wrt54g. I have an outside antenna hooked to the wap54 which is picking up a wireless signal from another building, DSL/Buffalo router. I then have the wrt54g plugged into the wap54g w/ cat 5. wap54's ip is 192.168.11.245, wrt54 ip is 192.168.11.1. I then try to hook into the new wireless signal on the wrt54 and get a 100% signal on my laptop but no internet. I can ping the wap54 and wrt54 but I cannot ping the outside world, whether it's an ip address or google.com for instance. Any smart people out there have an idea what I need to look at to get this working? I had the same setup working before at a different location but for the life of me I don't know what is going on. I have reset both wap54 and wrt54 to give default settings but changed the ip's to the one's mentioned. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Let me revisit my original question please. Mark Oney asked me what my gateway ip and WAN ip was but didn't return to the post. I found out where the WAN ip is shown on the WRT54G, in the Status page...Mine shows 0.0.0.0. So...when I set this up, I connected to one of the computers using the internet wirelessly instead of the computer connected to the DSL modem. Could this be my problem? The reason I'm not picking up the WAN ip address?
Mark Oney works 7 10 hour days a week and has better things to do with his minimal free time.
the post linked to below has pictures which illustrate how Default Gateway works. The router that connects to the WAN gets the WAN IP as the default gateway. Internal bridges and APs get the router LAN IP as a default gateway
Didn't mean to sound like you abandoned me Mark! No way for me to know what everyone does or doesn't do on the forum. I'm retired so I seem to have lots of time on my hands. And I thank you kindly for responding to my post...sorry for being frustrated! Please accept my apology...
Think I've discovered the problem! The WAP54G and the WRT54G are hooked up correctly but...there is NO access point sending the signal to the second house! Instead, I'm trying to use the antennaed ROUTER wireless signal from the first house and I believe the router has to be hooked into an access point.
