Default Wireless 2.4 speeds are insanely slower than wired and 5Ghz

Hello,

This is my first post in this forum. I am very frustrated and hoping someone can help. My problem is that my wireless download speeds are so much slower than when wired.I recently purchased a new dual-band ASUS wireless router and decided to do a speed test to see where it rated. When I have my laptop plugged directly into the AP I get around 22-25Mbps. When I try it on WiFi I get around 1Mbps, seriously. And this is with full signal sitting right next to router. I have tried changing the channel and all of that good stuff, but still the same results. I just bought a Samsung galaxy S III and when it is on the 2.4 frequency it gets less than 1Mbps, but as soon as I switch it over to 5Ghz I get 18Mbps. I have a good friend that is a network admin and he said that I should expect to see some loss of bandwidth, but not that much. I do have a lot of other AP's in my neighborhood, but these are speeds I am getting sitting feet away from my router. Can anyone tell me why my 2.4Ghz signal sucks so bad?

Thanks,

What speed are you connected at with the 2.4ghz band? There could be settings on that radio that are limiting the speed...

I only get around 1mbps on all devices connected to the 2.4ghz band. The settings on the router are almost all default except for security settings.

Are you in a high density area like a big city apartment? Have you tried the same device on other networks using the 2.4ghz adapter to see if could be your adapter?

I would check two things:

1. your 2.4 wifi adapter on your device receiving the signal from your wifi router - I would test it by logging into a different wifi network if you have the same issue it is your adapter if you dont have the same issue it is your router.
2. Use a program like netstumbler (pc) or macstumbler -not sure if it still works - netspot for mac works but it is a little different and requires you load a simple floorplan to plot the signals (mac) and check to see how many other wifi networks are around your area on the 2.4 network.

I have seen 2.4ghs perform horribly in a setting like new york city. I was working on a network and the top floor (29) of this building had so many other wireless networks interfering that the only way we could get a wifi connection was on the the 5.0ghz radio.
