Default Wireless Connection is strong - Explorer internet access poor.

This is so wierd...

I have very strong wireless connection (excellent / very good) all the time but explorer cannot connect to any websites and times out. When I get closer to the router suddenly there is activity over the WLAN and I have access. Why can I not get internet access when I have a strong wireless connection - and oddly sometimes no access at all?

Even with a strong w/less connection I sometimes cannot get into the NETGEAR config logon.

Equipment :-
Vaio Centrino Laptop with the Intel ProWireless 2200 Card. Having difficulty in updating the driver on this - any easy simple way ? Driver is 9.0 series was 8.X.X.X but managed to get it to 9.X.X.13. Latest seems to be 9.X.X.17.
B/Band wireless router is a Netgear 834GT
WEP encryption is ON (64bit), Using a key I provide
SSID broadcast is on
B/Band provider is BT
I have uninstalled Norton Internet Security
Windows firewall is OFF
BB test within router config works fine.
I live in an apartment block!!!

Should I select Open or Shared network in the Browser connection setting ?

PSP connetcs to the network VERY easily and access ismmuch more consistent than my laptop.

Any other settings to consider ?

Help : Too many hours spent on this now !!!!!!!!

Having sniffed around - it seems like a DHCP error on the router or interference from other wireless networks...

I think its a bit of both ....

I will try following...

1.Re-install / update firmware on router.
2.update driver on wireless card on laptop to latest (still not sure how?)
3.play with different channels starting from the highest and working down.

Anyone know where I can get free wifi spectrum analyser software ?

Will let you know how it all goes...

The Intel cards can be a pain to get working with many SOHO routers, a firmware update on the router usually fixes it. Report back on how you get on!

OK used Channel 13 after finding with Netstumbler that 11 had two very strong and close networks running - 6 & 1 was also being used by other close networks.

Updated wireless adaptor to latest firmware and sorted.

Since it was working and the router was on the latest firmware anyway I did not want to fix something that was now working - so did not reinstall router firmware. If problems return I will reinstall the router firmware.

Happy camper now and peacefull household finally!!!

P.S. : Word of advice - in apartment blocks it seems its almost always inteference and Netstumbler is a fabulous tool to find channel gaps.

do you get a DHCP address from the router ok? does it have a default gateway (ipconfig)
can you ping the gateway? can you ping beyond the gateway?
is DNS working? (nslookup Google)
is your browser using a direct connection rather than proxy server?

OK more work on this ... changing the channel helped the connection but did not solve the problem - changed channel again after another sniff of local channels and better but still slow to open Outlook etc...

So unmounted SC101 drives and hey presto seems all solved. This SC101 seems to keep polling the unit to see if the drive is up and running etc... also it takes and age to register the drives as avaialble. Since I only use the SC101 as a backup unit keeping the drives unmounted is fine and improves overall performance considerably.

A long overdue defrag also helped matters.

Why can the SC101 simply populate its drives' as network drives rather than local machine drives...??? Seems unnecesary and adversely affects performance.

BTW if you are doing a big backup over the WLAN to an SC101 rather use a hard wired connection - much much quicker and consistently reliable.

I am still only a stone's throw from a rebuild though ....
