Default Wireless router as access point???

Hi,

I just after an answer to a query I have.

I have three pieces of equipment.

1x Belkin modem/router. (f5d7633-4)
1x Belkin wireless Desktop card. (standard)
1X Netgear 4 port wireless router/switch. (MR-814v2)

I want to connect the Netgear wireless router (attached to xbox) to my desktop without cords.

I thought that by sharing the internet connection from the wired lan on my motherboard (via ethernet cable from belkin wireless modem router) to the wireless desktop card that the Netgear wireless router could be connected to the internet(thus allowing the xbox to be wireless).

I tried this today and it didnt work. My question is will it work? or do I have the wrong equipment. I was hoping to use the Netgear as a wireless access point to some degree.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have searched quite extensively today and found many answers unfortunately not the direct one I need. All help appreciated.

Hope I have made sense.

regards,

Sed8ed

Default Possible

Hi there

I can give one way of trying. If you turn internet connection sharing on the the wireless card in your PC, it will then alocate IP addresses via DHCP(i think). Then turn off DHCP in the Netgear but making sure it has a IP address in the same subnet as your network(so you can still access it). If you plug the xbox into the switch side of the Belkin wireless router it should be able to request an ip address and the wireless card on your PC will respond with the correct gateway.
This works with most wireless routers unless there is some rule blocking traffic between the switch and the wireless side.

Good Luck
Dale

Using ICS and a wireless PCI card can be a real hassle, while it works I have found in the long term it is not that reliable. If you have lots of problems, personally I'd set up the Netgear as Dale suggested, then plug one of its switch ports into your Belkin router's switch. That will essentially turn the Netgear into a standard access point for your whole LAN. You will then need an additional access point (make sure it supports client mode) or client bridge to plug into the XBOX and use this to connect to the Netgear.
