Default Wireless will connect, but won't show any available wireless networks

Hi all. My problem is that since moving into my new house, I haven't been able to see any available wireless networks. I've been managing to piggy-back off of one of my neighbor's connections, but seeing as I've installed a wireless network now, I'd like to be using that. I've also noticed from all of the tutorials that I've been reading that instead of a manual "add" tab when trying to change the preferred order of network connections, I've got an authentication tab. Am I just not looking in the right area?

Thanks in advance!

Way more information is needed. What operating system are you using to start.
I'm not familiar with Vista, but you should have a wireless icon in your taskbar that is either showing a computer, or a computer with an x through it. Which is it?
If its there, right click on it and arrow down to 'show available wireless networks'.
What kind of router did you install? Where?
