Default Nokia E61

The Nokia E61 is a smartphone from the Eseries range, an S60 platform third edition device with qwerty keyboard targeting business users in the european market. As of Q4 2006 Cingular and Rogers Wireless have deployed a similar yet restricted version designated the E62 in the North American market. This model is substantially similar but without an 802.11 WiFi chipset or W-CDMA (UMTS) 3G support.

On 12 February 2007 Nokia announced the E61i as a follow up product. This version has most notably a 2.0 megapixel camera and more shortcut keys on the keyboard.

VoIP Support

The built-in SIP VoIP client works fine with any SIP provider. The device can connect to an IP PABX, for example on an office network. This allows the device to assume the role of an extension on a company phone system. As of early Q4 2006, the default client included with the phone does not have the ability to perform NAT traversal, and is therefore limited to local area network connectivity. As of firmware revision 3.0633.09.04, Nokia has added both STUN and persistent TCP/IP for NAT/Firewall traversal. Older versions of the phone can be upgraded to the latest version for free using the Nokia Software Updater which is available for free from the Nokia website.

E61i

The Nokia E61i is an improved version of the E61 featuring a 2 mega pixel camera. The joystick has also been replaced with a pad and direct access buttons for multimedia and address book have been added. It is scheluded to be released in the second quarter of 2007.
