D-Link Air DWL-520 revision -IBM Centrino/INTEL

Hi,
I am having a problem trying to set-up my first wireless network between a desktop computer and my laptop. I cannot see the other maps on no matter what I do.
Can this be done or am I wasting my time?

Desk top
D-Link Air DWL-520 revision "E" desktop
Pent.III 512m ram

Laptop
IBM Centrino/INTEL
1.3 gig processor
512 ram
XP pro(service pack 2) on both machines
