Default Good sites for AP`s

Amateur radio operators in .nz have a national link for 2 meter/70cm bands and more, comprising of repeaters located on mostly prime sites.
each repeater location is maintained usually by proximity to the nearest radio club ( NZART ). To link citys like Auckland to Whangarei then itl be a definite target to secure good sites for aps, if its a non-profit organization then whats stopping us asking NZART clubs to hookup AP`s on thier sites?
I used to maintain a few of these sites myself, power is allready onsite etc.
ahwell just an idea
if anyone thinks this is a valid idea worth considering then i`ll chase it up
if not, no harm done

Great idea. With ham radio being lower frequency then wifi then they do not need line of sight and thus some of there locations may be no good. In saying that though i am sure there would be a few around that would be perfect. If you know a few sites then by all means make a few calls and see what comes of it. If we can get good sites we can easily get some gear together.

yeh, tho before I do, what sort of AP is required for any given site 2.4/5Ghz, what size/type of antenna? if its a directional then pointing where? ( location of nodes the site ap is linking to ), depending on the ham repeaters coverage it may be possible only in a certain direction etc. and a few other questions im bound to be asked. I guess some planning is needed to determine characteristics for individual sites. Field testing prior to submitting a query may be beneficial to deem wether the site is actually going to work and to provide some physical stats to the people we`re asking. the more professional its presented to them, the more itl be considered.

one of our sites is about to be installed on a HAM operator's mast, he is a great guy and he is most happy to help out with new antenna design's etc. All he wants in return is a bit of a hand with a huge new mast and some internet

Cheers
