Default Meadowbank Node

I have no gear yet but have registered my location on nodedb.com (Bigted in Meadowbank)

Here is a piccy of my view across Parnell, Newmarket, the city, and even the Nth Shore

Well, you're quite close to me (I'm Michael on NodeDB) and if you could get a link to the network and I could get a link to you..... (I'll stop dreaming now). I also don't have any equipment yet though.

I honestly think I would have a better chance of connecting to someone in Devonport (6kms) than into GI. I am on the wrong side of the ridgeline to have any line of sight to you. (See previous link to my view)
Someone like Matty_J or Cope or Oliver would probably be a go-er.
Aza might be as well.

I'm keen at looking at some kind of directional long link (for braggng rights!) as well as as a sector antenna for closer (2-3km) nodes.

I have added a map view as well of my field of vision:

Default Link

I am in orakei but from your picture it seems that I am over a dip.
Ask ShadowX about a big aerial and get yourself a grunty AP,
The linksys WET11 is a grunty one but I don't know if it acts as an accesspoint. Cheap enough though.
It would be interesting to give it a try when you get some gear.

Is there anyone on Kepa Rd who is high enough to link to?

What can you see up St Johns Rd? Can you see the Dental Surgery? (across and closer to Blackett Cres)
Can you see Eastridge?

Yes, I can see right down St Johns Road to Blackett Cres (direct line of sight) and can see Eastridge, Selwyn College, most stuff along Kepa Rd before it dips down into the basin.

Was talking to Stephen Cope this evening and he asked me to post these messages(since he is not registered on the forum):

"Can you please take a photo more to the right of Eastridge? You might be slightly too low to see either Cope or Oliver".

"How well can you see Selwyn College?"

"JJ, get the WAP11 instead of the WET11: cheaper, and it has more features."

"Can you also suggest he uses Helix because he can see them"

Noodles,
I have a Dlink 900+ AP up and running with the standard antenna.
Will be putting up a "shadowx" 8 slot waveguide next weekend and
setting up a smoothwall firewall shortly thereafter.

Can you supply a suitable IP range please?

Can I assume that I would use bigted.nzwireless.org as the name for
the node?

I will update nodedb in due course...

Cheers,

Steve

Default Node up and running!

OK! I have my node up and running!
It may be up and down occasionally while I sort out my firewall/server suituation, but in general is in regular operation.

I have installed an 8 slot ShadowX 180 deg slotted waveguide and attached to a Dlink 900+ AP. The antenna is mounted on top of my 3 storied house (one in a block of 4) much to the amusement of my neighbours. Currently running on Channel 11, SSID is bigted.akl.nzwireless.org.

http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/~sdmcc/of...ew/antenna1.jpg

I have pointed the antenna north and slightly to the west of the sky tower.
Hopefully this will give a reasonable coverage across more of the northern part of the city. (Maybe even parts of the Nth shore)

http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/~sdmcc/of...antennaview.jpg for a view.

I have left the AP wide open at the moment with no WEP or MAC addy restrictions, so feel free to try and connect.

Noodles has assigned me 10.23.22.xxx as my subnet, i'm not running DHCP yet so you will have to manually assign an IP.

I have a much larger angle of view from the roof which can be seen below

http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/~sdmcc/of...utheastview.jpg

http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/~sdmcc/of...uthwestview.jpg

I'll probably add a second antenna (not sure what type though) at some point in the near future.

Please, Please, Please have a go at connecting and report back with your findings.

Thanks

Steve

Stephen (kimihia) asked me tell you (bigted) that he biked past your house this morning and tried to connect to your AP. He said that its clearly visible from the road but he couldn't connect to it. He thinks that it was a fault with his Zaurus but he mentioned that the signal strength wasn't too high (beside the cafe).

Just before 10am by the look of my logs.

MAC address 00:06:25:47:E85

I get the feeling that it is up too high for people to connect
that close to it. (Does that make sense?)

eg It is up on top of a 3 storied building and he would have been 50 feet
away. Not sure though, I have no way of knowing if it is working or not!

Yes, the height could impact the signal close to the antenna. If youn want to resolve this you can tilt the antenna down a little by bacling the top U bolt with a strip of aluminum.

This is why the segmented arrangement is better than the 360degre ones as you can downtilt the 180s but there is no way to do this to the 360's

I just went for a walk down the road and got a block away.
Had a Toshi Notebook with a Nokia C110 802.11 card in it.
No external antenna.

The signal was getting better and better the further I went.

Just to remind everyone, DHCP is not running so you cannot connect unless you manually configure your IP address

10.23.22.x x=2 to 10
mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 10.23.22.1
workgroup = home

Hi bigted. Was just talking to Stephen and he asked me to post this for him:

"I went back two days after my first attempt and tried from further down the road. Nothing in response. I couldn't pick up his AP."

"Today I went past bigted again and managed to connect. I've got some screenshots, but they are nothing spectacular. I was driving too fast to give it a real test."

"Or should I say, the driver was driving too fast, and I couldn't type fast enough."

Cheers

Excellent, I have pointed the antenna down a little to improve reception.
(Most of my signal was originally pointing at the sky 8O )

(You went by at 16:44 by the look of my log file, same MAC as the one previously)

I have managed to detect my AP from 950m LOS away using a standard PCMCIA card. Couldn't get a link though as the card couldn't get that far.
Need to make/buy/win a portable directional antenna for better wardriving..

PS: Anyone know a someone called nileishika? (S)he got a connect (and a dhcp lease) the other day. Just wanted to know if they wanted a more permanent link...........
