Default How far?

How long is a piece of string The distance will depend on the losses in the path (trees, buildings) and in the feeder coax - also there is not much point in having a booster on only one end, you would need to do both, and anyway you can get some big distances without a booster.

Have a look at this page ...

the rest of the site has lots of good info too.

Maybe 5ks - however the dish is highly directional so using a laptop on the other end would not be realistic - except as a test.

A better approach to your problem would be to establish the type of cover you want (point to point, or point to multipoint) and distance you want to cover and then select the gear based on that. What is it you are trying to do?

Default well ok

i want to be able to use my own personal laptop at work for downloads ect. and personal emails. its about 4-5km's away and there is 1 wall before my office at work apart from that its prety much LOS. the only gear i have now is my adsl router Dylink RTA300 i will buy a ap and hook it into that, now say my work was 5km away what gear would i need on my laptop (portability is my main thing for my laptop) its prety clear that i can't stick a grid or aerial on my work building "Boss would fire me", also if possibe would there be any way so appart from using it ant my work i could also be able to hook in from the beach or round the nebourhood, what gear will i need, im thinking 54mbit speed cause 11bit has crap range and i can't afford all 108mbit gear thatnks all

The wall could be a show-stopper (depends what its made from), but assuming it isn't you might get from home to work with a 24 dBi dish at the home end and just a standard whip/omni on the laptop - but it would be definately point-to-point.

Better would be at the laptop end a directional antenna with around 12 dBi of gain - maybe a panel or cantenna or yagi. On the base end you will need at least 12 dBi of gain - the type depending on whether you really want wide coverage (multipoint). A dish or yagi for point-to-point or a high gain omni, eg one of the slotted wave-guides (180 or 360 degrees) or a high-spec colinear.

Just something to think about, that booster is pumping ~27dB into a 24dB antenna, which is a radiated power of 51dB. Take some cable loss into account and we'll call it 47dB

This is still above the eirp of 36dB/4W, so it's illegal. Even DSE say the following about the booster:
"In some instances, the use of this high gain booster may exceed allowable RF emission limits. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure they comply with local legislation."

This is all off the top of my head of course, do some reading on link budgeting.

To answer your question, 24dBi antennas are generally used in the 5km+ link range
