Not really.
Go to http://www.john.geek.nz/nzwireless/cbd.joh...ns/P1010411.JPG and take a look at the newcall building at the bottom left corner of the waveguide - its the big one.
Its white with a big square reddish/brown top.
from your location, i assume you , the newcall building and my node will be in a straight line.

I have moved my node about 5 metres higher.
It was on the roof of the third floor.
It is now on a 2 metre mast on top of the lift shaft (another level higher).
I am getting a receive signal about 2db higher out of it.
The mast seems to wave in the breeze a little but I should be fixing this within a day or two.

Cheers
John

It's true Seton! Not a stable connection or anything but it did detect it.

I have fixed the waving of the mast in the breeze - waveguide is not stable and because of this has been moved to the very top of a 2.1 metre mast on the top of the lift shaft on the top floor - all in all now gives about 5m-6m higher than it used to be - I get a far better signal from my place now.

Cheers

John,

What distance and how good is the signal?

Wondering if I chould not drop out a packing plate so you can get a little bit of downtilt?

Regards
Andrew

Shadow,
I think i may still have a downtilt problem.
I tried at my place (10km away) with a 19db grid and thought I should have at least picked up the signal, but nothing.
I plan on setting up a 24db at home with my ap on it and then downtilting the antenna a suitable amount for this range.

Cheers
John

John,

10Km with a 19db should have got a prety good signal, I think you are much lower than the waveguide and if my memory serves me correctly the terrain is also a lot lower where you are?

Would have to work it our but one thing you may like to try is to downtilt the antenna so as 10 degrees off the top (upward) is pointing at the horizon.

My AP got a mention in the current (December 2003) issue of the Telecommunications Review on Page 3.
Its in a short article regarding home wifi networks serving internet to neighbours.

<edit>
I have scanned the story due to numerous requests.
It is available as a 300dpi jpeg here
Or as a 100dpi jpeg from here

Take care & Merry Xmas

I have a spare box which I am thinking of putting up here with about 80GB of 'data for throughput testing'.
What sort of data should this possibly be?
Should I allow write access to particular directories?
Anyone have any spare Hard drives to loan for extra 'data for throughput testing'. I think I can spare a 40GB drive too - flying lessons are eating into my disposable income something chronic at the moment.

I would really like to know how much use this would seriously actually get and if it is actually worth the effort. Does anyone want to take any guesses?

Cheers
John

Would you like the drive to be full of "data" to be tested correctly?

Does the aerial cover just to your house of have you put another one up to cover further North of west?

Wookie,
Empty or full, either would be a great help. And due to the location (roof of work) pr0n or anything to do with hacking would be a big no-no.

I have a 2.4Ghz box which I plan to put onto the AP.

I can't get it from my house however it is a fairly trivial process for me to connect to it from work
If it needs to be moved to the north a little, so be it

On that note... is there an adjustable downtilt device, maybe adjusted using a thread or something for fine adjustment?

Cheers
John

John,

We are working on the downtilt device. not sure as to when it will be ready as they will need to be cast. hoping to have them in about a month if all goes well.

Should be prety easy to fit one to your antenna.

Thanks,
I think i will modify a sat dish mount as one of the members here did it and it seems like a good idea and I have access to mounts relatively cheaply.

I have modified the mount and will be installing the waveguide as soon as this rain in the city stops.
My waveguide will then be able to be accurately down tilted for my house (of course) but should get a lot of the city side as well.
I need to get on my roof and see if the new patch antenna suitably illuminates my sat dish - if so it is a very cheap and reliable dish feed.
(For those who didn't know, I was getting an awesome receive signal with a 90cm dish however the cantenna was only illuminating a small area of the dish so it had very low transmit gain)

Wish me luck...

Any chance of a photo of the patch antenna as a feed?

Wel, for those of you who are interested....

Richms and I decided that one of these mounts would be nice and strong in high winds and so I went on my way modifying it to work.

Here is a close up of the installed tilt mechanism on my waveguide. It has been painted in primer grey to stop any rust from forming on the newly cut steel.
The scholars will note that the pole mount end is upside down in comparison to a normal satellite mount as we need downtilt, not uptilt.

Here is a zoomed out shot of the new modification.

Sorry about the quality of the images, I used a shitty pencam which had such bad colors I ended up just converting to black and white.

Nope, and I just realised that the dhcp in the access point is not working....at all.
I will soon be adding a pc to the city end to handle dhcp and other file hosting. Maybe even 256k or something of internet too!

I finally got a connection to it from home and actually transferred data in both directions at 2Megabits.
I was having a problem with transmission power (heaps 'a receive gain) - Shadow got me to test his circular dish feed which seems to work quite well
