Default Nodes in waterloo, wellington

Hello All

Has anyone setup a node in the lower hutt region?
This excludes the wireless network the lower hutt council uses and the nzwireless node at somes island.
http://www.nzwireless.co.nz/SITE_Default/S...atest/somes.asp

I would like to setup a connection but dont know if there is any one else around.

Cheers,
Techie

afaik redevil was setting something up down that way, but i'm not too sure how far he's got with it

best to check http://www.nodedb.com/newzealand/ni/wellington/? for nodes near you

you might also want to add yourself to the map, so other ppl know you're interested

Hi Techie,
I'm the nodedb admin for Wellington, so I look forward to seeing your entry.
I have an AP ready to go up in Strathmore and my buddy at work is about ready in Island Bay way. Shortly there after we shold be able to link the 2 accross the harbour/airport - I hope.
Let me know if I can be of any assistance with installation, making antennas advice etc etc.

Cheers - Colin.

Hi vicarious

Joining the network...hmmmmm....not sure there is one to join yet. We'd need a good cross harbour link to hit my place. As for gear. That depends whether you want to be a a client node (just hooking into the network), or an AP (providing some sort of service and/or extending the network so others can hook to you).

To extend the network - especially in Welli - you'll likely need a client wireless card/pc and high gain antenna. To provide service you need an access point (commercial off the shelf or Linux based) and an omni directional antenna.

I've had several discussions on our mailing list over the types and polarisation of omni antennas we should use and I recommend the slotted waveguide omni which is horizontal polarised. The Auckland guys are mainly going vertical polarisation - not sure why. You get much better signal propagation at horizontal (just my 2c).

We are looking at having a get together of the wellington 'clan' soon(ish). I suggest you hook into the mailing list as thats where most of the activity takes place. There is a mail archive if you want to search it or just get a general feel for what is going on.

Let me know if I can help with anything. I monitor this thread so either here or the mailing list is good to get me.

Cheers - Colin.

Hi y'all I'm a newbie to all this but keen to join/assist a wellington network. I live in Normandale with a good line of site over petone.
I know citylink is making antennas but not sure how much they might sell them for.

Hi Ping,
Welcome to the Wellington end of NZW. If you haven't already you might want to visit nodedb.com and register your node there. I'm pretty sure that there is at least one other person out that way, if not more. I'm in Strathmore so I'm not sure we would get any line of sight between us.

Antennas - depends on what you are trying to do. Being a node attaching to somebody else may need a grid dish or similar. Being an access point for others will need something like the slotted waveguide design.

Let me know if I can be of any help, either via the forum here or the mailing list.

Cheers - Colin.

Actually have some more time on my hands now, so I'm keen to get Wellington rolling.

I see quite afew people have put themselves on nodedb as well, if you havn't please do so and we'll get a better idea of who's where.

I'm pritty much on the flat of the valley, which isn't the _greatest_ for a AP.

The components I've gathered sofar consist of a D-Link 520+ adapter and a D-Link 900AP+, both with stock antenna - havn't ventured into antenna yet.

Is anyone skilled in more than really bad html?
I've still got wellington.nzwireless.org hosted (didn't point its DNS to 41south as it's never up when I check) so if someone can make a page I'll throw them the ftp account details.

Default Commitment and Location!

Thats what its all about. Obviously a number of keen guys who are active in auckland. Wellington has some really bad areas where the geographical features get in the way. But there is a financial and time commitment to getting involved.

I reckon there are a lot of people who visit this forum who are in my position. Quite interested by the prospects of the whole thing, but not too sure about the time required, or getting the hardware.

I'm quite keen to be involved, but as I have just gotten interested in wifi, I'll have to see in a couple months time whether my interest is the same (and when I've paid off my credit card and can entertain the purchase of any gear).

I'm really keen. I'll be getting a dlink 900AP next month, along with a 24dBi antenna (http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/hg2424g.php)

I live on a hill in Johnsonville with a good view of all of Johnsonville and Broadmeadows, along with direct LOS of Mt Kau Kau.

I'm pretty keen to setup something, how do I subscribe to the mailing list?

I am in Petone and interested in a wireless, but being a wireless noob, I have no idea what wireless gear I need or what type of aerial is requred. Is it possible to have a link across the harbour with standard type equipment or is that too far away.

I do everything with linux if that helps :?

what does 'horizontally polarised' mean?
and what does 'slotted waveguide' mean?

sorry for the silly questions, i'm a newbie

if this link i'm planning goes ahead and works, i may be able to be convinced to put up an omni pointing out to wgtn somewhere and offer domestic inet access

I'm stuck in the dip of karori along with another guy from nodedb. We're not connected yet but we're looking at going for it.

We are REALLY looking for someone up Wrights Hill to relay for us, the view up there is great, LOS to CBD, Northland, Petone, Kaukau and Karori. Take a look at the pics I took http://www.fishy.net.nz/gallery/WrightsHill

So if you know of anyone high up in Karori, they could become quite a useful node for connecting suburbs together. Of course some of the shots would be very long.

I know a network technician from Citylink if anyone wants some enquiries about their antennas or something?

I'm keen.. I'm on the western side of Petone and could act as an AP for at least a year...

I discovered a possible place a tad further inland to provide excellent coverage... would require council approval but it's a "community project".. I'll have a talk with Techie about it though

While that's figured out with consent and hardware to use, I could act as an intermediatary. I should be able to get a fairly solid link with Techie and Redevil, so the irish theory of a tightly packed triangular cell works out well, and I have a fairly good view of wellington, so a pair of satennas and some crossed fingers could do the trick for a cross harbour link...

The alternative however is to approach either www.araneo.net (they link from the train station to the weltec tower) or www.nzwireless.co.nz (they link via somes to fairfield) and ask if their infrastructure can be shared for a fee... wouldnt hurt to ask...

Anyone else still interested/getting this going? I'm keen. Although I live in a Jville with a real clear view of basically the whole of Jville and Mt Kaukau.
