Default Wellington Backbone Network

Hey All

I am wanting to get a group together to start putting a structured approach to a wireless (11b/g) backbone for Wellington/Hutt/Porirua Area

I'm kinda new to wireless etc and know the basic's but i was after

a) Some people willing to help plan and rollout the network
Some people willing to donate roof space/money/parts

Does anyon have any real-world based trails of how far with a directional ant at 2.4ghz on the 11g freq you can travel before you have to fall back to 27mb?

While I dont have an answer to your networking questions (Im rapidly trying to learn about this stuff myself), I have had a look on nodesdb.com and noticed that the alias you are using on this forum does not appear on the node map.

If you havent added yourself, hop along to http://www.nodedb.com/newzealand/ni/wellington/?

and add your node so people know where you are located.

Get in contact with Redevil as he was keen to get the ball rolling so to speak for the wellington area. I have offered to help (redevil) with getting a website for the wellington group going. Am still awaiting his reponse.

Im sure he would be a prime candidate to talk to.

there's no problem with you being a bridge, that's gasp's standard equipment, selected as such for "client end transparency" or in other words it makes connection setup a helluva lot easier for users

what problems are you having with your connection?

I dont get any consisincey with the connection. Packets are usually semi large but only at odd times. I have hosted a couple of pics of netlimiter with my connection with DC and bittorrent open trying to max it out. The ISP plan is 256kb International and 3mbit National. As you can see i get nowhere near that. Im running a panel aerial and 3 storeys high looking at nzWireless and no more than 3km away. No one knows what my problem is... Im really really keen to fix it!! Got any ideas? Surfing the net is, o k to do.

I'm well aware of the plan, I've been a GASP user for several months now

who did the hardware install? did you pay for it or did you DIY?

If you DIY'd, you're on your own. If you paid for the install, the NZW guys should be on the case...

Either way, I think you'll find that with depeering, the 3mbit national wont be as good as it used to be.. and IIRC it's sold as "up to 3mbit" with particular emphasis on the words "up to"

Dont forget that they are using standard wifi technology - it's shared bandwidth, so things will slow a bit at peak times.

Something to try - give drtcp a crack: http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
