I just stumbled over a small problem in a little network that I try to administer. The network has wireless clients with WPA-PSK. I use the Netgear client software to control the card, and so the logon is handled by that application, as I understand it.
The problem is that the Netgear client starts only when a user logs onto the machine, which prevents me from ever rebooting a computer and get in touch with it again remotely, via VNC for example. Obviously what I'd like to do is run the Netgear software as a system service instead, but are there any drawbacks with that? Can it be a security risk? Will it cause any other trouble?
