Question How do i set my network key - netgear

I have a wireless network set up on my home PC, which is also connected to a laptop via a wireless connection. However, the wireless internet is set an 'unsecured' and i can't seem to be able to set a network key, as the tab in the internet settings menu is missing! It is available on the laptop though, which is also connected to this internet connection. Is it possible to set a network key via the laptop, even though the internet was originally set up on the PC???

Help much appreciated!

Sam

if you set it on the laptop and router you will lose the connection with the pc if its not set the same.
you're network is open at the mo and you are taking a chance.
log onto your netgear router eg http://192.168.1.1 or whatever and set a wpa/psk passphrass there.... make it a good password with at least 7 characters.
you will then lose connection with the router.
now do a scan with your pc to see the networks in your vacinity. try to connect to yours and you will be prompted for a password. enter the above key and you should be on.
repeat for the laptop.
spend some time reading the router manual.
other things to do.....
change the ssid or disable it from broadcasting, enable mac filtering, and lower the broadcast power if possible to what you need.

Default How do i set my network key - netgear

Thanks FishMonger: I found out after some more research that it has to do with a code embedded in the router that only she can access. In any case, I referred her to the Tech Support group of that website. Thanks for your reply.

Unhappy old laptop won't save/take new WPA key, can't access wireless anymore

uuuugh.
Can ANYONE help?
I've tried re-entering the new WPA network key that I set up for my old router
a zillion times on my old laptop, but it won't save/stick.
It keeps reverting back to old one, and I can't access wireless on that old HP laptop
---never any problem before the change of router password/key.
No problems on my new Acer laptop.

I really don't want to reset the router/key again, b/c we now have 4 laptops connecting wirelessly in the house.

How can I get back on w/ my old laptop? All Windows XP that it's running is updated, up to SP3--but there's obviously something preventing the new key from being recognized/saved.

I've checked a bunch online, HPforums, etc., and can't figure it out.
I've got like 50gigs of music I want to transfer to my new laptop from the old one, and wanted to do it just via wireless network file sharing.
Thx for any help/ideas!!
D
