Default https: over unencrypted network

Are there any issues visiting secure web sites across an unencrypted network? I pass credit card and personal information over unencrypted networks all the time, but I make sure they are https: and the "lock" is on. This should be secure, correct? (apples and oranges kind of thing, right?)
Thanks
