I have a fairly typical setup, Dynalink RTA 770W feeding 2 desktops and a laptop, all using WinXP.
At the moment the LAN is not secured, mainly because I have not had the courage to lock it down in case I lost access to the router, have read some horror stories.
Is there a site where I can get simple, straight-forward instructions on how to secure my LAN?

Thanks...

Just remembered something small that noodles missed that will help heaps.

Turn OFF DHCP on the AP. Ive had past experiences *cough* last year *cough* where idiots left DHCP on and any monkey with a wirless connection can connect easily to network and start using you internet.

Just thinking, turning off DHCP will slow people down, especially if they're just driving past, but it's easy to pick up the range/gateway address if you sniff out some traffic

True again, but everythign now days pretty much only slows you down or/and keeps away dumbasses who think they are the leet haxors.

Only think that works right now is WPA with a password length of more than 20 characters or VPN's (not including enterprise-ish stuff like EAP and RADIUS)

Though 802.11i stuff should become more common place soon, with WPA2 etc...

Who knows how long it'll take to break that though.

Dont run you say? Good thinking, though you know some poor sod is going to be late to his train one of these days and get capped as he runs to catch it.

In these world nothing is secure...u cant secure your network im sorry, u will always find a hacker that can crack in your network (especialy if he's useing linux) but u can discourage lame hacker or good hackers that dont want to waste a lot of time with this simple rules:

1)Change your router username, password and SSID
2)Use advance encryption: Wpa-PSK (TKIP) is supported by a lot of wifi devices, but its better if u use more advance encryptions (!!!DONT USE WEP!!! IT TAKES 15MIN TO CRACK USEING WINXP)
3)Use the MAC adress filter.
4)Dont broadcast your SSID
5)Use a network monitor utility i suggest look@lan (www.lookatlan.com - Network Monitoring and Management Solutions)
6)Turn off DHCP on AP
7)IMPORTANT turn off your network when yuor not useing it.
