Default Wireless Bandits

A local paper ran a front-page article on wardriving that is quite a funny read. The guys involved actually got caught in the act by the network owners. I've copied it onto my community website, you can view it here.

Enjoy

A friend of mine got busted playing a prank on another mates network. A concerned neighbour thought he was 'spying', phoned the police and gave them his licence plate number after seeing him waving an antenna outside the car. Fortunately the cops didn't care at the time (this was a couple of years ago).

I even got pulled over myself testing my own community network over three years ago. The female cop couldn't keep a straight face when she saw all the gadgets set up in the car including a full desktop PC (don't ask) and waved us on with a laugh

You can get magetic mount antennas for cars now (I think Dale sells them), I recently got a 7dBi one and it looks nice and innocent stuck on the roof of the Subie Awesome stuff for doing surveys/range tests on the community network without some paranoid public trying to report you in for 'hacking'.

I remember trying to test my AP with a parabolic and an ipaq, this was about 4 years ago before everyone knew what wireless was, but it must have looked a bit weird with me in a car with a huge antenna.

Curious here, how did you connect the iPaq to the antenna? That would be awesome for quick site surveys!

It was a battery/pcmcia card slot pack that seton leant me for a while, so I just chucked a wireless card in it and used it like you do on a laptop. Downloaded ministumbler and a few other tools and bob's your uncle.

Quite annoying doing anything other than stumbling on a PDA though.

Did the card have an external antenna connector? What type was it?

Oh a PCMCIA adapter, I've figured that out now! That's fully cool, now I want one!
