Default broadband router and computer downgrade to old speeds

I use public wifi sites with my old c.2003 Dell windowsxp laptop. I have used it without probliem for 2 years at public sites at broadband speeds. Now, my neighbors are getting broadband like speeds and I am getting 2wire modem speeds such as 48Mb/s or 54Mb/s. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it? Any suggestions?

What is running at 48Mbps? If it is your wireless, what is wrong with that, unless you have an N access point and adapter?

You need to be more specific as you are providing no information realy, other than my internet is slow, why! Where are you getting the speeds stated? How do you know what your neighbours are getting? Are they using wireless? What is their equipment? What speed are you measuring, wireless or download?
