Default Cannot connect wirelessly to BT Voyager 2500V

Hi,
Apologies if this question has been asked before but the Forum Search facility does not appear to work!!!

I have just set up a friend on BT broadband with the supplied Voyager 2500v. The main PC (connected by Ethernet) works fine, however I cannot get his daughters PC to connect via wireless.
The second PC is a windows 98SE to which I have connected a Linksys WUSB54G 802.11G USB network adapter. I initially had trouble with the SSID because the handbook is out of date and did not include the V of 2500v, however after delving into the router manager I confirmed the true SSID. The router uses 128 Bit WEP encryption so I ensured that this was entered into the Linksys.
After the normal couple of reboots for Win 98 the connection software shows I have a wireless connection to the router but it wont access the Internet!
I have checked all setting three or four times including the passkey and have also tried Mixed mode or just 11G and infrastructure or Ad Hoc(which wont connect) but still cannot connect to the Internet.
What I find strange is the adapter is set up to receive an IP address dynamically and DHCP is enabled on the router but the IP address and sub net mask of the Linksys appear to be that of the ISP and not the local LAN which has a private IP address range ie 192.168.1.XXX. I have tried giving the adapter a static IP address and it will connect to the router but still wont connect to the Internet.
Any suggestions gratefully received. I have set up a number of wireless networks but never had this problem before.
Fozzy
PS the Win 98 PC has Zone Alarm and AVG installed but I have tried disabling Zone Alarm with still no effect

Try it without the WEP, just to see if it works.

Also, there's nothing wrong with the search facility, what were you searching for?

Thanks Noodles. After posting I saw something in another forum where the guy was having similar problems. He turned off WEP and it worked!! If this works what does this mean in terms of resolution? Is the problem a security issue ie encryption key? It doesnt explain the lack of a private IP address though. I assume i that the adapter is being assigned an IP or there would be no connection?
I don't want to leave my friend without any encryption though. Do you know if there is a firmware update for this router?

re the search facility. on the banner along the top of the forum which starts User CP and ends in Log Out, the Search Link and Quicklinks buttons do not work. You can search within the thread but not the site. It is customary and polite before posting a new question to search the site to see if it has been asked and answered previously.
regards
Fozzy

If the WEP settings are incorrect between devices no traffic will pass, even though the connection will appear to be connected. The IP address is assigned to the PC from the DHCP service in the router so if the link is not working you can't get an IP.

I'd recommend getting WEP set up again, just double check those settings while your configure it.
