Default "Cant renew IP connection" and "Media Disconnected" ?

Hi -
This is my first time asking for help on a forum but I am so lost. I recently ordered a refurbished older Dell laptop with XP on it for my mom - we didnt have a large budget and she just needed it for word processing and basic internet searches for her college classes.

It just came in the mail and looks/runs fine - however, I CANNOT connect to the WiFi. The computer recognizes all connections in the area, will accept the WiFi password for our home WiFi, but that's where the problem begins - it literally will not connect beyond that point. When I tried to repair the connection, it states that the problem is that the computer cant "renew the IP address."

Now, I've tried reading other forums for a walk-through on how to fix this, and I usually get to the command prompt to release and renew the IP - but then I get an error for that due to "Media disconnection." From there, all the forums have super complicated computer talk to fix that, and I simply cannot follow

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is and how I can fix it? How to I connect media so I can renew the IP? Thanks so much in advance.
