Default Computer shutsdown during XP installation

I am sorry if there is another thread on this, i used the search function and couldnt find one.

I just brought a new hard drive (Seagate Baracuda 200GB SATA) and when i try to install windows it beggins the process and then shutsdown by itself.

It will remain on with the BIOS screen open for hours, its not until i try to install windows that it shutsdown.

It goes through the formatting stage fine and then as it beggins to install files required for setup it shutsdown every time. although it does it at different stages, it might get further down the process sometimes it barely starts

It didnt do this with my last hard drive which was also SATA, but i dont think its a hard drive problem??

any help would be massivley appreciated

First things to try: see if the hard disk does it in another PC (process of elimination), and also try updating your motherboard BIOS. Even if it is a very new model it is worth checking the manufacturers site for updates.

Default Bios update

I agree with nzlamb, almost all of the hard drive install problems i have had are due to old BIOS versions.

I have seen motherboards cause install problems. Infact on one PC I couldn't install windows XP, but could install Linux just fine. Turns out there was some dud capacitors on the motherboard.

The best course of action as Jeremy said, is to eliminate hardware a piece at a time.

re: Computer shutsdown during XP installation

Dear ryan,

I suspect the settings of the new HDD, questions which need to be eliminated are

1. Which type of HDD your computer had before installing (Seagate Baracuda 200GB SATA), if it was IDE, settings will be different in BIOS
2. If you have 2 memory sticks, try with either of the sticks and chk
3. If both dont work, disable ext devices and integrated devices in BIOS
