Default Dynalink RTA770w ADSL/ROUTER question

Hi all,

Im a noob to wifi, and have just splashed out on a new rta770w adsl/router its a 4 port hub/router with wlan all in one.
I am waiting for tcom to turn on jetstream so dont have adsl going yet.
I am trying to connect my laptop with builtin wifi (lan-express AS IEEE 802.11g)
to my router it should be a doodle.
My thinking is that the 4 porthub/router and the wlan are on the same network
ip's are default at present
192.168.1.1 for router
192.168.1.5 for laptop wireless connection
192.168.1.10 for linux/gentoo desktop
subnet masks are same.
green light is on router for wlan, web page is telling me wlan is operational.
can ping router from desktop (ethernet)

Have tried various settings on both laptop and router configuation but the laptop fails to see my router.
both are 802.11b/g.
What am I not doing ? does the adsl connection have to be live before the wlan can see the rest of my network?
appreciate your thoughts.

dont take this the wrong way, but did it come with a manual? dynalink's manuals tend to be light but informative enough...

I set up my Dynalink ADSL ROUTER (RTA770W)and its working well
but only one problem. Im working with the Dynalink support people now and try to get it resolved.

I hook 1 machine to the RTA770W thru the thernet port, and 1 machine thru the wireless client adaptor (to be specific its Asus WL-160g Wireless LAN USB2.0 Adapter, 802.11g/802.11b)

When the two machines are up everythings are working perfectly. I can use internet on both machines and machines can ping each others (also I can shar files between the two workstations)

However if I turn off the machine which hooked to ethernet, the wireless
client will disconnect and cant connect back, until I switch on the other
machine.

If I turn off the wireless client machine, the ethernet machine will still
work no problem

So my question is "can wireless client work alone even without a ethernet
machine turned on?" I suppose the answer should be yes but I just couldnt
make it go. And I cant think of any settings which would be related to the
ethernet machine which make the wireless client to depend on it.

Default Waiting for jetstream

Thanks for the comments, Im just going to wait till the telecom guys turn on the big pipe. Then i can test the router out.
The documentation hinted at being able to use wireless + ethernet. But i will just wait till thursday for ASDL....

In the meantime I have got plenty to do trying to get linux/gentoo to play nicely with my Sony Vaio pcg-k66p.

I have just installed a 770W and it doesnt need the ethernet machine to be running for the wireless lan to work.

I did download and install the new firmware up grade from the Dynalink site, have you tried that?

Default RTA 770W - a problem shared is a problem halved

I have a 770W linked to a desktop PC and a laptop PC by ethernet and a wireless laptop (802.11b). The wireless laptop connection to the Internet works whether or not the desktop is on. I initially had problems viewing the network machines and so made the wireless connection a DISTINCT network from the desktop/laptop (it works happily enough). It helped to turn off all machine F/Ws (the 770w has a hardware F/W) and then re-enable the F/W for the wireless connection ONLY once setup was complete. I restricted access to named MAC addresses only. I set WPA-PSK as the security, set automatic connection (not manual) and hid the SSID. I have tried to puzzle out the restriction for outgoing traffic on the 770W but it still defeats me (I'm not up to speed technically yet), so I use Zone Alarm.

I'd like to boast that I did this all in minutes but it actually took about four hours to solve every problem as it cropped up <LOL>. I recently reset all the passwords for security's sake and had a frustrating hour trying to get it all to work again.

The manual is informative but is written by TECHNICIANS who understand everything but communicate little. I'm an average Joe with networking experience that stopped at Novel 3.12. Sites such as homenethelp (http://www.homenethelp.com/802.11b/index.asp) shed light on broad aspects but not on the nitty gritty. Once I have sorted out the restrictions on outgoing traffic, I'll pat myself on the back.

Default And another thing

I kept Internet Connection Sharing OFF for ALL machines because putting it ON means that a machine would try to connect via another machine, not via the 770W itself. That might explain why the network and Internet access go down when a particular machine is turned off.

Yeah i had the same problem with my WAG54G which is written about in this forum pages too. Turned internet sharing OFF due to me not being able to see the other PC's on the network..
