Default Help : Can't "see" Nokia M1122 on my network

Hello

I am sure someone out there will think this is a basic question. If so, your help would be appreciated.

I have just brought the modem 2nd-hand and I am trying to set it up. I can't "see" the modem on my network. No fault lights show on the modem. The seller said it tested OK before I got it. I have not yet attempted to make the physical connection to JetStream. Just the network.

I run all static IP addresses in the range 192.168.1.1-255 on Win 98 machines. I have tried changing one machine to dynamic addresses (with all other machines switched off) but no luck.

I have read the user and admin manuals. It looks like my best chance is to use the CLI to set the IP address. I assume (it isn't specified) that this is an RS232 port so I will need a RJ45 to 9pin D adaptor.

Regards

Dazz

It may be setup with telecom defaults, which means you can only access the web UI from the local network and the settings are::
ip: 192.168.1.254
login: [leave blank]
password: Telecom

* note the capital T.

So try going to http://192.168.1.254 in your browser

If the previous owner had it setup differently. Ask them to forward you the details of the ip and login.

Bingo. You were 100% correct.

Now I just need to set it up. I have done the password and user name. That's the easy part. I have the email from JetStream but I am not sure what the rest of the settings should be. I am reluctant to make the connection to the wall until I am reasonably secure.

At present, I run an IPCop firewall box between my network and the internet. I have a network card available to add to the firewall. For test purposes, I have the modem connected within the network.

The main page of the M1122 displays the following information:

DSL status: Not connected

PPP status: Not connected (VCC1)

Ethernet status: OK (10Base-T)

Uptime: 0 days, 00h 05m 33s

SW boot version: Bx1x2008.R01
SW appl. version: Gx1x2210.R09
HW version: T66280.01 C
Serial number: 61004507368

Should I consider upgrading the firmware (if available)?

I know these are very basic questions but I haven't been able to find the basic answers anywhere else.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers

I have the same firmware on mine and it runs fine. However newer firmware provides alot more options and a firewall etc. I've been meaning to update mine but haven't got around to it.

You'll have to setup your m1122 as a bridge to your gateway (ipcop machine), so basically it forwards all traffic to it.

OK. I found a reference that indicated the CLI requires a network cross-over cable to interface with a PC serial port. I will wait until I get the modem working on the current firmware before I attempt an upgrade.

My biggest risk is that I will have to reconfigure both my firewall and setup the modem at the same time. If one is wrong, it will be hard to fault find.

So if I don't reply to a post, it means I can't get things running.

Cheers

You dont need to use the cli interface, you can just telnet in and do exactly the same thing...

This place is just a shining gold mine of information. I hope to get enough time to get things up and running over the next few days.

Thanks

I am screaming quietly in frustration here. I am trying to match the modem to the red zone firewall. All the manuals and all the info I have doesn't quite connect together.

Telecom tell me:

Operating Mode: G.992.1, G.DMT or ANSI T1.413 iss 2
1. VPI: 0
2. VCI: 100
3. Encapsulation: RFC 2364 (or “PPPoverATM”, also known as “PPPoA”)
4. Xtra DNS Servers : Primary 202.27.184.3, Secondary 202.27.184.5

I assume that settings 1. and 2. are for the modem and that the modem is already setup for the JetStream network. For the local network settings, DHCP is turned off. NAPT is off and I deleted all pinholes. In the Routing section, Dynamic routing protocols are off. The entry for Static Routing is empty.

My IPCop firewall wants to know about DNS & Gateway settings. I assume here it is refering to the telecom pri and sec DNS. It also wants to know the default gateway address. Should I enter the IP address for the modem 192.168.254????

For the red interface, IPCop wants me to select:
-Static or
-DHCP or
-PPPoE or
-PPTP.
I am not sure if these refer to the local red network, or to Telecom but none of these settings match the Telecom PPPoA.

The simple act of adding a 2nd network card to IPCop caused problems when the new card was allocated to the green side and the old card became the red side. Took half-an-hour to figure out what had happened.

Soooo.....
Assuming that the modem ADSL settings and the green zones are OK, my problem is that I need to configure the red zone network. I am not sure if some of the setting refer to the Telecom network or if they refer to my red network.

If I can get the network settings correct for the modem, it dramtically reduces the number of possible combinations for the IPCop red zone network settings.

Any advice would be gratefully received. :?

Ok, So there are two ways of doing this.
I used to have the same setup that you want to use before I went to Wired Country.

The easist way although not the best way is to set up the M1122 as you have done but turn NAPT on. You will also need to pinhole all ports and all protocols to the red interface of the IPCop box.

IPCop Red is setup as static with the default gateway set as the M1122's IP address, so IP cop might be 192.168.1.254 mask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.1.1.

Unfortunately, this way the IPCop box does not have the external Internet IP on the Red interface and in effect you are sort of double NATing your connection. Not to much of a drama though.

The harder way is you put the M1122 into bridge mode and enable the IPCop box to talk to the M1122 using a PPTP tunnel.

I have not done this, but it is the better technical solution.
You will need full admin rights to the M1122 to achieve this.

Search google for m1122 bridge mode

Good luck!

Steve

Well I don't see any point in doing this twice, so I will have a go at bridging the M1122. A quick google indicates that others have suggested the same thing.

I will start by updating the firmware. It adds more features (complexity) than I have at present.

I will let you know how I go. 8)

Yes bridging is better but harder.

Telecom setup these modems to only give you minimal setup options via he web ui. What you'll want to do it alter the running and startup config for the router so you have full access. So while you're updating the firmware, remember to review the configuration files

That only applies to the telecom owned ones.

And you can easily remove the password with a console cable. I have one here if your near beach haven

OK so I am trying to upgrade my Nokia Firmware to ver 2230.R04, which seems to be the latest version, but I can't find a link to it.

Over at DSL they have a link to contact the admin but the admin doesn't seem to want to respond. A google search only gave stale links.

Has anyone got a spare copy or a live link?

In the mean time, I am upgrading my firewall to IPCop ver 1.4, but I am still on dial-up.

My MW1122 is running Gx1x2230.R04, however I do not know
if I can get a copy it out of it?

I have the Gx1x2220.R08 firmware file if that is any use....821Kb
so I can email it to you if necessary....

Hold it!

Go to http://www.wlug.org.nz/archive/nokia/ for the 2230 you want.

Some good info here as well http://openmind.xs4all.nl/mw1122.php

I have just been rumaging around using telnet and found these lines using the conf- show command:

mngtvcc
pvc 0 101 ip-llc
ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx yyy.yyy.yyy.yyyy

where x = IP address and y = mask.
It looks to me like this provides a port into my modem from the big bad internet. Not good for security. The problem is I can't find a way of deleting this back door. (still running ver 2210)

Is there a hidden super admin mode?

yeah, that was put there by telecom for remote admin purposes, because it's on 0,101 as apposed to 0,100 it'd be hard for anyone to actually get in using that
