Default Help: Nokia MW1122 WLAN Setup

Hi All (first post - please be gentle :? ),

I've got a MW1122 which I'm going to be using for a couple of Wireless clients - trouble is I'm getting syntax errors whenever I try to enter a client MAC address.

Since I'm trying to lock things down as tight as the device will let me this is causing me some problems. Can anyone point me to a decent HOWTO which will give me the correct formats / syntax of the entries I need to restrict 3 MACs to specific 128 bit WEP keys (one each)?

I have one of these as well - nice units.

From the MW1122 Admin Manual (I can email you it if you like - PM me)

Enabling access control
You can add a wireless station to the Client table by typing its MAC
address to the MAC address field and clicking the Add new button. Use
lower case characters only when typing the MAC address. You must
identify the wireless station by filling the Name field. Activate the
Client table by selecting Client table MAC address from the Admission
method pull-down list and clicking the Apply button. Click Remove
button if you want to remove a client from the Client table.

Encrypting wireless connection
If you want to activate WEP, you have two options:
Use a fixed default key for all stations. There are four default keys
available and the key is selected by clicking the corresponding
radio button. Typically, there is no need to use any other key than
number 1.

Use a separate station-specific key. Enter this key in the Client
table Wep key field.
Before you type the encryption key, select the key length from the
pull-down list. Available lengths are 40 bits and 128 bits. If you select a
40-bit key, you must enter a key with 10 characters. If you select a
128-bit key, you must enter a key with 32 characters. The key is a
hexadecimal string, so the available characters are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
8, 9, 0, a, b, c, d, e, and f.

Note
Remember to configure the same key to your wireless client. If you use
your wireless client for web configuration, you can copy the key from
the Key field and paste it to the wireless LAN client software. Then you
can click the Apply to activate encryption. Note, that if you enable
encryption on either client or MW1122 only, the wireless link will be
disconnected until you have enabled encryption on both devices.

Thanks Big Ted,

I've already got the manual and entering in the WEP key doesn't seem to be a problem, it's when I put in the MAC address that I'm getting the syntax error. I've tried several different MAC addresses from the other wireless cards I've got and they all generate the same error (even if I choose no WEP key in the fixed WEP keys section - just to keep it simple.)

Actually, now that I'm @ work, I've managed to dig out my administrator manual and note in there that the MAC address is in the format aa:bb:00:11:a0:b1
I was using all caps and no : , I did try caps -with- : and lower case without : but don't specifically remember trying all lower case, with colons - Doh! 8O

I might have solved my problem. Now I just need to try and track down the latest firmware!

Hi All,

If any one is interested I can confirm that the syntax error issue was caused by the case of the letters in the MAC address.

For anyone else having trouble with Syntax Errors while entering a CLient MAC on an MW1122 I would recommend you use the following formating rules.

aa:bb:00:11:a0:b1

noting that all letters are lower case and each set of 2 characters is seperated by a :

Now - seriously, where that's firmware at?

Don't know if it's the same for the MW1122, but M1122 updates are available from http://www.nzadsl.co.nz/software/nokia/Default.htm
