Hi Guys, can someone please have a quick look at this netstumbler output, Cisco Aironet PCI Card with a 25db Parabolic pointing to a DLink 900AP+ with a borg waveguide.
This is the output from the Cisco connecting to the DLink...
Its weird that the signal drops to nothing then comes back again real strong? http://www.dunedinwireless.co.nz/~dan/dune...dinwireless.jpg

Anything in the way? (Fresnel zones) trees/barnard animals etc. Are the antennae mast mounted (and correctly) anchored with guys (it helps)? Those are the two questions which pop to mind. Check the pigtails if it happens when there is movement.
what distance between them ?
Try using a borg wave guide instead of the parabolic.
what dongle are you using on the cisco ? d-link
what cable are you using on the cisco ? dlink
what distance between cisco -> parabolic
what distance of cable between d-link and borg wave guide?
Are the aeriel mounted securely or do they sway in the wind?
Is the dlink 900ap+ set to use the right antenna? Thats what I see with mine if its set to diversity. If Im close enough to get the internal antenna it will appear at a much lower strength rather then gaps of nothing.
I thought it may have something to do with diversity, but we are currently hardset to the Left Antenna. All cables should be sweet as, brand new connectors, RG213

this is the current settings on the dlink...
any ideas on what should be changed or altered?
looked ok to me
maybe the 4x thing shouldn't be used, it does however create more signal strength, same with setting antenna to left instead of right, seems to be more strength in netstumbler, distance is about 4K I think or less

Even though stumbler shows gaps, is it actually dropping the signal? I have seen this before but thought it was just a function of stumler or the AP being busy to log the signal for that small period of time. I would say if files transfer with no worries and you dont actually lose the connection then there shouldnt be a problem.
Click on the help button (+) when in the configuration page. (Or go to http://1.2.3.4/help_adv.html#02 - replace 1.2.3.4 with the correct ip)
This sentence is from hardware versions B2,C1 and C2 and may be different for other models...

Antenna Selection
The antennas on DWL-900AP+ can be selected for different usages. For most indoor usage, the default Diversity Antenna setting is recommended. If you want to replace one of the antennas with an outdoor external antenna, choose Left Antenna or Right Antenna to maximize the transmit power to the specific side. Note: Right Antenna is External antenna of DWL-900AP+

That 4X mode is an arse - turn it off unless you plan to use it - basicallay AFAIK its only compatible with d-link PCMCIA cards (prove me wrog if you want)
John, yes I had thought the 4x mode would only be compatible with native dlink crap, I might replace the thing with a cisco/linksys or try the other antenna in the meantime, still, interesting that I get a bigger netstumbler response when selecting the left antenna

Just a thought.
Wookie
The windows box (2K or XP) connects to the network and see's it but then drops the connection inline with the netstumbler graph leaving entirely. I have tried hardsetting the ssid into the card's properties and lowering the speed but it still drops out.
We appear to have direct line of sight, the only thing is we are slightly higher than the AP, maybe we are too high, I will go back and look at that. might tilt the antenna up slightly

Are you running stumbler and trying to use the same card to connect? that wont work. You need to untick the allow windows to mess with my lan if you want to use stumbler, and you need to stop stumbler scanning if you want to use windows on the lan.
