Intermittent no Wireless Network detected

I have an Acer Trevelmate 2420, using Windows XP. Sometimes no Wireless Networks are detected, although other laptops in the same house always detect OK. Can't seem to find a pattern to this. Out of desperation I've reformatted the hard drive and re-installed Windows XP, but still the same intermittent problem with Wireless Networks. Sometimes when I switch on the laptop no Networks are detected, if I leave it for a period of time (anything from 5 mins to a couple of hours), Wireless Networks are detected. Sometimes they never detect and sometimes they detect as soon as the laptop is switched on. Sometimes it will work OK for a period of time then suddenly lose the connection and not be able to see any Wireless Networks

Is it possible there is a loose connection on the network card in the laptop? If so, how easy is it to get to it?

I've re-installed drivers from the Acer website so am fairly sure drivers are not the issue.

Hi Ashley,

You've probably already tried it, but it's worth making sure that the laptop wifi is set to the same channel as your wireless router/modem. There may be bundled software that does this for you or you can see it in the hardware profile. If these are different it might explain the problems you've been having.
