i recently downloaded a bunch of stuff and was unpleasantly infected with something. I used a program to get rid of it all (adaware personal SE), and got a little delete-happy. The computer's issues have been fixed (freezing, jumpy, etc), but now i have limited or no connectivity on both my WLAN and my ethernet connection.
Some details:
It's an HP pavilion notebook in the 1000 series (1080 maybe?) running XP. I bought it just shy of 2 years ago. I'm currently living in a house in france where i connect with wireless. The family uses a wannadoo modem provided by Orange. There are 2 other computer connected to the network: a desktop using some kind of wireless somehow? and another laptop. Both of these computers are having no issues connecting.
I then took the computer to another network, where both the wireless and an ethernet cable gave limited or no connectivity. Other computers on this network are operating fine (including the one i'm on), but mine still isn't working.
The computer recognizes local networks and connects always, but always has limited or no connectivity.
i looked into it some more. i'm basically figuring that the computer can't find an IP address... god knows why. so i went into the command prompt and tried the ipconfig /renew command. it came back that the system that underlies the WSAStartup process is missing, and so it can't renew the IP. does anybody know what that system might be, and how I can replace it?
I also had some sort of a virus or corruption that I think AVG cleaned up and mesed up my connection. I have a DLink g DWL-132 adapter. I also installed XP Service Pack 3. I got the updated driver from DLink and reinstalled the utility which cleared the reboot error messages. But now I have limited or no connectivity (more NO than limited).
I saved the WINSOCK fix file onto a CD and tried to execute it onto the machine, but it said the file is not a WIN32 application and wouldnt let me go any further.
My adapter is blinking as if its connected. But my router only shows lights for my phone adapter and this computer (both wired) as being connected.
Any suggestions since the WINSOCK fix didnt work?
I recently cleaned up my nephews computer, it was rather infected with virus's and stuff. When I finished I found that his wireless internet connect was busted somehow.
laptop: Vaio VGN-NR260E
OS: Vista home pro
router: WRT54GL running Tomato
We have another laptop, exactly the same, and it connects to this network no problem. I can get this laptop to connect to an old wireless router we have, its a Apple one.
I am assuming something got messed up when I removed all the virus's and stuff?
I reinstalled in the NIC driver and can even talk to the router itself. I can't seem to get a DHCP issue resolved. On the map of the connection, it shows that it connects to the router, but then there is a problem from the router to the internet. I am confused and frustrated!
