Default Lockups with new DLINK MIMO equipment

Okay,

I HAD a DLink DI-624 (108G non-MIMO) router, and DWL-G650 (non-MIMO) laptop card, and a DWL-G520 (non-MIMO), desktop PCI card....

Okay, so I was looking for better signal strength so I went out and bought the DI-634M (MIMO) router and the connect improved for both the laptop AND the desktop, but I wanted a little more, so I went out and bought the DWL-G650M (MIMO) laptop card, and the DWL-G520M desktop PCI card.

Signal strength and rates were great, but then the desktop (running Win2K) locked up (froze) after a short time , I upgraded to the newest driver availible and still it locked up after about 20-30 miinutes online.

Then, I noticed that the laptop (WinXP) with the laptop card was doing the same thing....but the laptop only seems to lockup when the power cord is not connected (running off the battery)....

I'm puzzled. I called DLINK and after an hour on hold, they kept not wanting to recognize that I had 2 separate devices failing the same way, and wanted to tell me that the ONE device (that they were allowed to address per call), was simply defective, and I needed to take IT back, and then make another call about the other device

Sounds like an odd issue. Any firmware updates available for the router? Being such new gear, they may not have ironed out all the bugs

Both of those MIMO cards use the same chipset (Atheros AR5005VL) and therefore the same driver. I'd suspect the issue is with the driver itself, try using a reference Atheros driver for both cards and see if that works.

There is a reference driver available at http://www.funchords.com/Atheros_4.1.2.71.zip although I don't know if it supports the AR5005VL.

Looks like I spoke too soon....The laptop crashes less often, but the desktop is still about the same, and the support from DLink is next to zero

Does your desktop PC use a VIA chipset? These are known to cause issues with Atheros wireless cards.

I'm not specifically aware of a fix for it. Try the latest Hyperion drivers as these fix all sorts of wierd and wonderful issues VIA doesn't let on about.

I use Intel chipsets exclusively as they seem to have far less compatibility problems with hardware.

Default Via

Yes my VIA based pc is a bit suspect too. I suspect it may have something to do with power saving or something related to ACPI. When running Atheros drivers can tend to lock up while computer is idle, or when I am out of the room. The latest Hyperion drivers seemed to help but it still gives a bit of trouble. My next PC won't be VIA chipset anyway.
