Default Major Out of the ordinary Problem. Thou shalt have fun trying to solve this one =)

Howdy.

I created an account for the single purpose of trying to get some help here.

I'll explain the problem in a simple manner.. or at least I'll try since English is far from being my mother language. I'm Portuguese.

I have cable. 8mbit.
Download from a national site (portuguese site): 1,0-1,2 mbytes per second.
That's good.

I bought a laptop, I got wireless B.
Download from the same website went down to 200-500kbytes per second, regardless of where the Router/laptop is located, encryption modes, firewalls, etc. Everything turned off, closest (2-3 meter distance laptop-router, just to be sure) and the maximum is 500.
And the connection also goes down.
First the internet connection, while still accusing ON, doesn't work. Then, I try to reconnect to wireless router, and it refuses, simply doesn't work. Finds the router, but can't connect.
I turn the router off and on, and it works again, until another restart (either 10 minutes or 1 hour later.. sometimes 6, who knows? It chooses it's destiny, it seems..)

Now you're thinking: That's easy, get a new router. I'll spare the work.

Got wireless G.
Netgear rangemax WPN824 (not that it matters).
I'll only say this: exact same problems.
Speed stuck at 500kbytes per second. When I connect the laptop to the lan port on the router, it gives the full speed.
Wireless doesn't.

My wireless adapter on the laptop is abg with the G only option ON. Same thing on the router.

If you need any kind of information, feel free to ask, I just want to get this over with, since my ISP ignores my problems. They say that if wired is cool, then it's not their problem wireless ain't giving the 8mbit (1mbyte/s).

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

*update on the problem: Just tried downloading 2 different files from the same website, and the sum of the speed for each download is above 800kbytes per second. 3 different downloads and I get a sum above 900. Maybe it's windows who's limiting my download speed? How the heck do I get him to behave??

When, through the same router, a wired connection is fine but a wireless one is crappy, you usually have a poor signal. Several things could cause it:

a) Bad placement of router near monitors, machinery, or a 2.4 GHz wireless phone base.

b) Weak wireless card on the laptop, maybe because of poorly tuned antenna.

c) Weak antenna(s) on the router.

d) Too many walls, or too thick, or with too much metal.

e) Router channel needs to change to something that doesn't get degraded by other signals, or simply one the laptop can pick up better.

Try to get around these obstacles and you might find your connection improved.

these are all excellent sugestions if you can try ang get onto chanel 6, most wirless acess points will be tuned to this channel much better than other chanels, it is also one of the chanels that does not have any overlap with other chanels....ie does not cross into channel 5 or 7. if these are used then try to go for either chanel 1 or 11, if memory serves me correctly, then these are also chanels without overlap issues, a realy good programe for this detective work is netstumbler (my favorite) get it at http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads...ller_0_4_0.exe

hope this helps
