Default My laptop keeps changing channels from 6 to 11

Hi,

I have a wireless Linksys router and at first when my laptop connects to it the channel number is 6 and I can browse the net with no problems. After a while (could be senconds or minutes, no fixed time) it suddenly changes channels and goes to channel 11 and internet doesn't work anymore.

Everytime this happens, I have to unplug the power cable from the router and plug it again and that fixes the problem for sometime then same thing happens again.

Why is that happening and how can I fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Not knowing the device you are using, try flashing the device with the latest firmware. If it already has the latest firmware flash it again anyway. I have had devices exhibit similar behavior and that has resolved it, but I only use 1 brand of equipment.

You may also want to run netstumbler to see if there are other devices in your immediate area. There may be a device out there with the same name with a stronger signal that your client is associating with automatically. If that is the case then just change the name of your device and remove the original name from the preferred networks on your client.

Regards

Fred

Thank you for your response. I tried to update the firmware on my router but the problem is that I'm not being able to access it.

It says in the manual that I should type 192.168.1.1 but that just gives me page cannot be displayed.

Also how do I change the name of the device and remove the original name from the preferred networks on my client?

BTW, my client is an intel wireless device.

First off, give us the make and model of the router you are having problems with so someone with knowledge can assist you.

The only way to change the name of the device is from the setting within the device, namely your router you are having problems with.

Once you have that fixed, to remove a device from your preferred network is just a case on opening up the properties of the wireless connection in question and click on "wireless networks" and remove the preferred connection in question from the list presented.

Regards

Fred

This is the one I have and it's version 4.

BEFW11S4: Linksys.com - Products/Wireless/Basic Networking/Broadband Routers/Wireless-B/BEFW11S4

I've tried many things such as removing the proxy settings under my browsers connection tab, and using firefox but it's not working. Could that mean that my router is dead or something?

Edit: I think I need to mention this, my internet connection is PPPoA where I have to dial a number with username and password. Also, my modem is Speedtouch USB.
