Default Netgear MR814v1 can't transmit above 1.5 Gbps

I have been using this Netgear MR814v1 wireless router for about a decade now. I have always had an ISP with less than 1.5 Mbps service and my wireless router has worked mostly fine. I just upgraded my Comcast service to 12 Mbps but can't get more than 1.8 Mbps out of the wireless router on a good day. The router should transmit up to 11 Mbps.

When I run an Ethernet cable directly to the router I can get 8 Mbps. I have already updated the firmware of the router. Unplug/plug the router, do a hard reset but it is still stuck on slow. Any ideas what is causing the problems? I know the short answer is get a new router but I kinda want to know why it wont run to specifications? Plus I am broke and won't upgrade router for a while.

If you Google [Netgear MR814v1] you will find quite a few reports of this problem and the reason for it - the WAN port on the Netgear MR814v1 is only 10Mbs, not 10/100 as the LAN ports are.
