Default Netgear WG111v2 will not connect to WPA router

hi
I am slowly going crazy here so hope someone can help.
I have a old ibm thinkpad x31 laptop that works great but the internal wireless card does not have WPA capability.

So I am trying a Netgear WG111v2 usb wireless.
I have no trouble connecting into wireless routers that have no security but even though I can see the WPA wireless router I need I cannot connect to it.
The Netgear tries and tries then eventually times out.

Any suggestions that work will get you a nice called cyber beer !
Thank you
