Default Problem connecting Sony Vaio TR5 ro Wireless network

I have a US Robotics ADSL Gateway installed on my PC.
I have been able to connect a HP laptop to this Network.
I cannot connect my Sony Vaio TR5 to this network using the inbuilt wifi.

I can connect the Vaio to the wireless network if I use a network card so I know the Gateway is working ok.

With the built in wifi on the Vaio the green light is on, it does not flash but I am not sure with this model if it should. I can "see" the gateway (URS9106) but cannot connect to it. I cannot access the PC or internet etc from the Vaio, it continuously says that the wireless network is unavailable.

Have anyone had any experience connecting to a wireless network using a Vaio and its built in wifi? Are there any known compatibility issues?

I am not too sure what to try next as all the settings appear to be correct.

I would appreciate any help you can offer. I have rung Sony and they say to ring US Robotics and US Robotics say to ring Sony!!
Thank you.

Youve probably already checked this, but one user at least has done this: check that the wireless switch is on. I dont deal USR, I am a D-Link user. But I will try to help, what chipset is your wireless card?? both the external and internal ones..

Thank you for your reply.

Yes I have turned the wireless connection on. I have checked that many times.

I think this is the information you require but let me know if it is not.

The SOny TR5 wifi is: Integrated Wireless LAN IEEE 802.11b/g (11Mbps ( 54Mbps (g)) Range:10m-100m, Frequency:2.4GHz

The USR Gateway is:Integrated 802.11g Wireless Access Point

Thank you

Default Some thoughts

Have you checked that DHCP is running on your ADSL wifi modem only. If not disable this on your VAIO and then cold boot both devices. Wait a little while for ADSL to reinitialise then boot up your VAIO.

It does not show up anywhere when I right click the wireless connection icon on my Vaio. When I highlight the icon all it says is Wireless conenction is unavailable. I do have wireless turned on on the Vaio. Nothing I do seems to make the connection available.

WEP has always been disabled on the Gateway and I have not had a porblem with other laptops connecting to it. Do the Viao's require WEP to be enabled?

shouldnt, I suggest, probably that you dont use the integrated wireless, there must be a compatibility issue or something. quick fix is to use a card.

Can you identify the IP address on your VAIO. if its value is something like 169.x.x.x then the OS is not being set by DHCP. To find out go to START - RUN - type cmd -enter then type ipconfig /all - enter it should give you the ip address, subnet mask and default gateway. also the address of the DHCP server.

Skink is right I am unable to connect to network therefor I have no IP address.
I know buying a network card would solve this problem but I want to exhuast all avenues first with the built in wifi.

I never resolved it. Sony were of no use at all in fact 3 different people I spoke to never returned my calls!
I have the wireless network working using a 3com network card. Obviously it is a compatiability issue with the inbuilt wifi in the Sony notebooks. Some assistance from Sony would have been nice. Good luck and let me know if you resolve it.

Default fixed!

i've just done two things:

i've just installed xp service pack 2 and i've downloaded a driver as an .exe file from intel.com and updated the driver in the control panel/system/hardware/device manager. i looked for a PRO/wireless 2100, have a look what type yours is in system/hardware/device manager.

there's a load more wireless related icons in control panel now, maybe it ws sp2?

anyway, it now works. i've pulled out my 3com card and am using it to connect to this forum. :-)

let me know how you got on.

dave

I have a pro/wireless 2200BG. I do have the latest driver installed on my Vaio but have not downloaded SP2 as I tried to install SP2 on my main PC and it caused endless problems so I rolled back to SP1. I will wait a little longer until a try and reinstall SP2 again. In the meantime I will use my 3com network card to connect. Thanks for your help and hopefully one day I will finally get it working.

Default Can not connect to WIFI

Hi,
I was wondering if you every figured out what the problem was.

I'm having the same problem with a brand new vaio TX series.

All was working fine until I got a popup mssge that said an internal program had turned out my wifi. After this although the green wifi light is on, it no longer appreat in the wireless control-panel.
The swith is physically turned on, the light in green, but no connection.

What happened?
It was working fine an hour ago!

Make that two. I've just spent at least an hour at a friends house trying to get their wireless network set up - all worked except for the laptop and, after an hour of struggling, Google lead me here and, of course, wireless was switched off. Without this thread I doubt I'd ever have worked it out, never having used a Sony before and not knowing they had a "wireless off" switch. Bizarre :-)

I just get into similar problem and found a solution!.

Go to wireless network card property.
1. Unselect "Internet Protocol Version 6(TCP/IPv6)
2. Double click "Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)
2.1 Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.

then Ok.. and it work after that.

cheer.
