Default Setting up RTA770W, help please.

Just installed my Dynalink RTA770W by ethernet to my XP PC and by wireless to my Win98 laptop. Both machines can now access the internet. but they cannot see each other on the local net. Each can ping the router but not each other. What else do I need to do to get the local network working?

Default me too

Hi there,

I too have just installed a new rt770w in my first foray into adsl and wlan. after much head scratching i managed to get the adsl on and my laptop communicating with the router fine. The problem arises when trying to setup security.

I managed to set the access restrictions after getting my wi-fi cards mac from the router, but can't get the encryption etc. to work. Have been trying to use the setup recommended for home users in manual, but when i enter keys etc. on router browser interface and then again in win xp's network settings they seem to think they are different, and certainly won't let the link open.

i'm completely new to all this and don't really understand the secuity options anyway. Any tips for a simple easy home setup and how to implement would be much appreciated.

cheers

pete

Default Fixed RTA770W

Well I have found my problem, just had to set Zonealarm on each machine to allow the ip address of the other machine.
Now, like Pete, i have to delve into the security aspect.
Anyone feel like giving a couple of noobs apointer or two?
WinXP SP2 has installed a Wireless Network icon in Control Panel but I havent yet plucked up the courage to try it!!

Theres a couple of things you can do for security.

1. Use encryption -- WEP is not particularly secure as it can be cracked with having captured only 1.5mill packets. (unless you use WPA, TKIP or AES which I dont know about)

2. Use MAC Filtering -- this is where you set the AP to only accept connections from computers on the list (make sure you have at least the MAC of the computer you set it up with in the list before you enable it and that its set to allow only, not block only )

3. Use 'Hide SSID' -- this is particularly secure as a program like netstumbler will show your AP but its SSID will show up as being blank. to connect you must know the SSID of the network, and tell the computer to use it.

I have a friend who uses a combo of 2 and 3 and has had no trouble with his wep-keys being cracked or his network being hacked since.

Also, if your a latency-freak, using encryption increases latency by between 0.5 and 4 ms

as far as I know, WPA encapsulates other technologies such as TKIP (temporal (rotating) keys) and AES

MAC addresses can be spoofed

Passive stumbler applications such as Kismet can still get the SSID

FYI

In saying that though, if you put in any form of security, you're going to disinterest most scriptkiddies. They'll just move on to your neighbour's insecure network.

In saying THAT however, some crackers may tend to view that as a challenge, so if you're going to impliment security, impliment the best one available to you. For a larger network this may mean a RADIUS implimentation among other things..

Ive had no problems on setting up the securities ie WEP and MAC filter etc.
Only problem I still have is I need the ethernet machine to be up and running for my wireless client to work!

Done tracert and both machine directly route to the RTA770W. so all clients should be independent to each others.

And they are on fixed IP address so it should not need any DHCP service.

I compared the latest bios on the dynalink website and my current one they are the same version 13B

So its still a mystery to me... lol
