Theres a couple of things you can do for security.
1. Use encryption -- WEP is not particularly secure as it can be cracked with having captured only 1.5mill packets. (unless you use WPA, TKIP or AES which I dont know about)
2. Use MAC Filtering -- this is where you set the AP to only accept connections from computers on the list (make sure you have at least the MAC of the computer you set it up with in the list before you enable it and that its set to allow only, not block only

)
3. Use 'Hide SSID' -- this is particularly secure as a program like netstumbler will show your AP but its SSID will show up as being blank. to connect you must know the SSID of the network, and tell the computer to use it.
I have a friend who uses a combo of 2 and 3 and has had no trouble with his wep-keys being cracked or his network being hacked since.
Also, if your a latency-freak, using encryption increases latency by between 0.5 and 4 ms
