Scoured the boards looking for a solution. Found lots of similar issues, but nothing exactly like this. Running Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 9100 connected to a Clearwire modem using a D-Link WBR 1310. The Dell Wireless WLAN 1350 Mini-PCI Card has a radio utility that is reporting excellent signal strength. I installed stumblenet, which is also finding the network and reporting a strong signal.
Despite the strong signal, there is no internet connection. When I run the IE network connection diagnostic it says that all hardware is working properly but that there was a catastrophic wireless error:
Wireless - Service Disabled
error Failed with error 0x8000FFFF: Catastrophic failure
I connected my desktop to the router with an ethernet cable and it's running fine.
When I try to use config /all on the laptop I only get this message:
Windows IP Configuration
Same with ipconfig /renew
I checked the directory to see if IP Config was where it was supposed to be and got this:
c:\windows\system32>dir ipconfig.exe
Volume in drive C has no label
Volume Serial Number is 84cc-e722
Not being a tech person, I have no idea what this means. I ran ipconfig /all on the desktop and got a complete report. What is wrong with the laptop? How do I fix it?
