Trouble connecting to internet through wireless router.

I am trying to set up a wireless network connect through a netgear router. I can connect to the wireless network and directly to the router, but i cannot access the internet through it. i also tried running an ethernet wire directly to the router from the laptop and i still cannot connect too the internet. I can connect when i plug an ethernet wire from the laptop to the modem. i have reset the settings on the router and reconfigured them. i did a automatic search for a internet connect through the router page, and it detected my internet but will not let me connect. all software and firmware was updated as well. the lights on the router show activity but, i am completely lost now.
