Default Trouble with D-Link DI-624 Wireless Router and Linksys Range Extender

Hey,

I have a wireless home network setup in my house for about 3 pcs, I have a three story house and the D-Link wireless router is in the thrid floor and I have another computer in a room at the garden where a relative lives and he has a Laptop, a Dell with an internal Intel wireless reciever. The problem with the basic router is that he only gets 1 to 2 out of 5 signal strength, which he tells me most of the times it just doesn't work. I did a research on Internet and we found Linksys Range Extender, which basically, is an antennae which you plug into your mains power and configure your pc to accept it and there you go. I ran the CD wizard which it included and setup the WEP to 64 bits and the correct password and it went fine, configured itself automatically. After the wizard finished with a "Congratulations, your Linksys Range Extender has been successfully configured" I proceeded to restart my Laptop and the Intel Wireless reciever indicated full strength and detected the network was fine so it then proceeds to aquire the IP address which it fails to do. I have tried everything to restarting the router and cable modem to changing the laptop and range extender to a different place and it just wont aquire an IP adress. I am probably doing something wrong but I have no idea what it is and I want to have this setup since I lave for a month in about a week and my relative wants internet badly.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Hi Tomas

All the the linksys routers that I have used seem to only want to communicate with other linksys routers only. They all seem to have a statement like the one I copied below.

"The Wireless-G Range Expander is compatible with the Linksys WAP54G Access Point, and both the WRT54G and WRT54GS Wireless Routers."

This may mean that you need to replaced your D-Link with a Linksys for it to work. Read the specifications and do a search for "compatible".

All the best
Dale
